We should have the army on full alert, all the time to...you know, shoot at those things whenever they show up.

Meteor shower fireball caught on tape in Iowa Midwestern sky - CNN.com - YouTube
No, it was nothing like that at all. It was very intense a small green ball, like you might get from a flair gun.Did not light up the sky at all. You could see the green revolving " ball" and an orange tail that thinned out as it got longer. The height was almost even with my House balcony. I know that, cause there was trees behind it. I am sure it went down in our woods, with in a mile, but, I could be wrong on that, it was moving so fast, maybe 4 seconds and it was gone. We live on a Mountain top , no outside lights were on, cloud cover, moon was not out as I recall. A very dark night. There was enough light to back lite the trees in the background.

You were fortunate to see one of the low-flying types which are abundant in UFO lore. Some people have recounted "meeting up" with these things while out walking at night. They are described as baseball-sized or sometimes basketball-sized.
Debunkers always explain them away as meteors or delusional observers - but seeing them at ground level can't be explained away like this.

From a couple of reports: "Tree line blocking my view off 2 both sides of highway. I noticed something really bright coming from over the trees from my left to right. Before I could think to myself what is it a green ball of light came shooting into view. It was burning bright and going fast, leaving a orange light trail behind it. The crazy thing was it was a clear dark night but this very bright thing disappeared before it got across past the tree line on my right.
Almost like it went behind something but it didn't. even if it went behind a cloud I would seen some light still because it was so bright but didn't. This whole thing happen within a few seconds and was over before I could even finish my first thought of what is that before it was gone."
"
After finishing my crunches I laid there on the road and I looked at the sky then looked behind me and to my right and saw a green fiery ball coming down almost looking like it landed in my neighbors yard. We tried to get close and see if it landed but his whole yard is fenced and I couldn’t see in the back yard".

Next time you see it, shoot it. If that does nothing, then just go drink a couple of beers and forget about it.

Listen , its fun to make light of this experience, I would be no different. However , this was real, not scientific and more than that there was no prep., waiting for something like this to happen.
So , in the interest of truth vs fiction, just a couple of old fools that see things that are not there, I will retract what we saw.... No, I guess it was just a Guy with a flare gun ( very high powered) that was up in one of my trees in front of my house, that could explain all but the distinction of such bright green vivid color, but then what do I know about the advancement of Flare guns ? . Its been a long time since I sold my sailboat.

If it keept a steady trajectory then a meteor is a likely explanation. I have seen things like that before and they are usually linked to a meteorite. UFO sightings on the other hand often have quick radical trajectory changes, suggesting that it is a controled spacecraft. There is no way to know until someone confirms that it was a meteor, and likely no one will ever say what it was for sure. At first when you described it I thought of ball lighting, but not moving that fast and seen so far away.

Daniel, Darstar said there were "trees behind it". What does that tell you?
I don't see him as irrational or delusional.

I know it is "The land of Enchantment ," but ,well I guess you have to be there. There were so many of these green balls in 1947 to 1955 the Government thought the Russians were behind it ! Over 30 years ago My Mother was on her mail route 5 in the am , central Iowa. She had the strangest report I have ever heard, included 3 unidentified flying something.windows all around, many lights, lasted about 30 min.zooming across the sky and very close to her sitting in the P/U watching. And this, from a woman who only believed in things she could see. No religion, nor Halloween stuff She hated magic and fiction books also. . They ran a long PC. in the local paper that week.
This was my first and only extraterrestrial happening it was fantastic for about 1 min or so. Tomorrow I am going to take a walk down the mountain into the deep dark woods....maybe ?
If you do go, be sure to take some Reeses Pieces with you, just in case.
