Talking So Cal RN to Royal Oak Michigan

Hi Friends!

Long story short...

Originally from SoCal, moved to Royal Oak Michigan 2007-2009 and got a 2nd degree BSN at U of M-Flint (don't hate the satellite. Getting into RN school anywhere when its this heavily impacted was good enough for me.) My fiance was the Detroit editor of Road & Track Magazine. We moved back to OC 2009-current and work as in an ER RN. R &T magazine in Newport Beach has died and the staff has been let go w/ the new magazine moving to Ann Arbor and free lance staff.

The automotive industry is such a tight niche and my fiance was able to land a job w/ GM as an engineer manager. Thank goodness nursing is everywhere! We're moving mid Sept 2012!!!

We are renting in Royal Oak again (we love it and plan to buy there). My question to you guys is, what's the word on the street w/ RN jobs? I have been scouring hospital online career positions at Beaumont, Henry Ford, DMC, St Johns. Open positions are one thing but sometimes they don't tell you whats going on internally like hiring freezes, budget cuts, etc.

I would like to stay in the ER and am not trained as a floor RN. I am waiting for my RN license endorsement to transfer to MI and will be studying for some certifications (TNCC, CEN, etc) to increase my chances of being hired. Ideally I'd like to work near R.O. but will commute an hour if needed. Any work is better than no work right!?!

I joined this forum when we first moved to Michigan and you guys have all been helpful and insightful. Thanks for all your help!

I am also an RN, not in the Detroit Metro but in SE Michigan. Most of the problems that I hear of with RNs not being able to find work in our area are due to them being new grads with no experience. If you have your BSN (and from a Michigan school, and that school being U of M, no less--satellite campus doesn't matter, BTW, it's still U of M) and a couple of years of ER experience, I don't think you should have any trouble at all finding a job in the Detroit Metro. Since Royal Oak is so centrally located, you could work at just about any hospital in the Metro, so just start applying on the various healthcare systems' websites, and I bet you will get calls for interviews in no time. Just for clarification, though, I am not including Ann Arbor in the Detroit Metro, because that would be quite a hike from RO, especially in winter weather.

I have not heard of any recent hiring freezes, and from what I can tell, hiring of RNs is picking up in this area. I have been an RN for 22 years, and everytime I remotely put out feelers for a different job I get more calls for interviews than I really even need or want, and I don't even have my BSN.

Actually, aren't they building a new medical center in Royal Oak? It supposed to be finished by 2014 so I guess if you look into DMC openings, this might come up at some point.

Wow thanks canudigit! I can definitely apply with a little more confidence now. I'm anxious about being without a job just because I don't want my skills to "got to waste." I don't mind working in Ann Arbor b/c I think eventually I want to get my Nurse Practitioner license from U of M so considering Ann Arbor hospitals isn't a far reach.

@ animatedmartian, thanks for the info on DMC. I'll keep my eyes and ears open!

Does anyone know about travel nursing? I signed up with Nightingale Nurses who said they contract with Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. I was also considering Expedient MedStaff (located in MI), Cirrus, and Onward Healthcare. Again, I would like to stay in Oakland and Wayne Counties.

Thanks for all your info!

You're very welcome, but no, I don't know anything about travel nursing. I have always been tied to one place due to family needs, but I think that if I was young and single I would definitely give it a try. It would be an awesome way to try out various parts of the country to see if you would like living there without having to totally commit. A lot of places seem like they would be fun to live in until you really do, but with travel nursing, you get to stay in an apartment so no house to buy or sell, and it is a temporary assignment. Yep, if I was 22 and single, I would definitely want to give it a whirl!

jazzyvirgo,
It took me 7 weeks. They don't send out hard cards like in CA. And I kept checking the LARA website to verify.

I did receive a notice in the mail stating they had my application but just waiting for the CA BRN to verify that I was a nurse. Be careful, some states require you to send a letter to your current state that you want them to send a letter to the state you WANT to be endorsed to. For CA, that meant a $60 check and letter.

Hope that helps!

Also, does anyone know anything about Beaumont/Mc Laren/Henry Ford Hospital/DMC? SO far, on this travel assignment I've been hearing a lot of negatives about Beaumont ER staffing 8patients to 1 RN w/ a Level 1-3 acuity. Sorry but that's acceptable in CA unless you've got float or staffing to assist. That's malicious, DANGEROUS and a lawsuit waiting to happen!

Thanks An6el177 for replying , I did send the 20.00 request for the certification to Illinois, I sent a self addressed pre-paid Fed-Ex envelope along with my request. The State of Illinois sent it next day via the prepaid FED-EX envelope I enclosed to the State of Michigan. They finally looked at my application and they told me I filled out the wrong app. I did the RN by examination and not RN by Endorsement so they told me to email a request to switch my application to Endorsement. I also included in the email that Illinois Fed-Ex the certification and they(MBON)received and signed for it on Nov 9. So they tell me it takes 2-3 weeks for them to process incoming mail. They entered my information into the system 6 days after they received my application. They still have not processed the certification they received from Illinois....All a major headache, and I have a job waiting for me. Nov 30 will be 6 weeks from the time they received my application. All they have to do right now is process my certification from Illinois and issue me a license number. Im praying and hoping It will all be processed within the next 2 weeks. Hoping it will be next week..... The process is RIDICULOUS.
