I've never lived right 'in' Alpena, but I have lots of childhood and young adult history near Hubbard Lake and Lincoln. My dad belonged to one of those big hunting clubs near H. Lake and we used to go there every year when huntng season hadn't yet started up.
Then, my (former) husband and I joined Lost Lake Woods Club (Lincoln) where we vacationed and spent lots of time at. Now, after a 12 year hiatus out west, I have returned, re-joined LLWC, and am up here most of the time. I'll be moving up for the winter and, then, if/when I sell my downstate home, I may move here permanently.
I love it on this side of the state! People are a little more 'real' and property values are more in line with reality! There are some terrific buys on lakefront properties here, if that's what anyone wants.
Alpena's mall is a bit of a joke, but the area, in general, is growing and now has Home Depot, Wally World, several good restaurants and a great shoreline. The cement plant is history. There is also some light industry. I think it's a good thing that the area doesn't depend heavily on tourism to survive. I hope Michigan turns around sooner rather than later, but I also hope, in a selfish way, that the "sunrise" side of the state is never "discovered" to the extent the west side has been.
