The fact of the matter is, Michigan is bad, and getting worse in terms of the job market and economic conditions.
Interesting as I am someone considering a move to MI. I assume you mean the manufacturing side of the automotive industry. As I read in another post

"While the Big 3 are suffering from dwindling market share, plant overcapacity, and legacy costs eating up their profits, basically every automotive transplant (VW, Nissan, Toyota, Isuzu, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, etc.) and their Tier I suppliers has a technical presence in this suburban Detroit area. It's a modern and affluent area that serves as a stark contrast to the decaying neighborhoods in the Detroit proper"

Not to mention RCE and AVL the two big international automotive consultancies - I thought that technical design/consultancy side of the automotive industry was doing rather well. VW, Nissan, Honda etc can all have miscalculated - could they ?

Default stay in oakland county

oakland county is nice with a decent amount to do. only to the point if you want to be close to detriot and in a safe area look in Troy, Rochester hills, Alburn Hills (were pistons play), or around Bloomfeild/west Bloomfeild. if your looking for somthing with less congestion go with Novi area or Milford, maybe South Lyon (small town feel close to most everything) about five min's from Novi and . If you like shoping go close to Troy area with the Somerset Collection (mall) or around Novi with Twelve Oaks mall. both nice but Sommerset more so for designers and its much nicer. as far as college go with Wayne State, UofM or Maddona a Privet universety with a decent medical area. My father went to wayne state and got a Phc there and it seems to be working

Livonia and Canton are incredibly dull suburbs. Their only benefit is that they are closer to Ann Arbor than my hometown of Rochester Hills.

Birmingham or royal oak if you like town; west bloomfield or bloomfield if you like more space.
Troy is a souless wasteland of malls and ugly office buildings.

Can you please eleborate on your statement about Canton being an incredibly dull suburb? What makes it such a dull place to live?
