Hello Escanaba,

I write this from Manila (yes, in the Philippines) where our three girls are about to finish college.

I see that Delta county has a handful of filipinos, and was wondering if my wife could find some companions if we moved there next year. She is a nurse and has been a U.S. citizen for twenty years, and our girls are all taking professions in health care.

I am from Traverse City but don't wish to return there. I am a merchant mariner so getting a job isn't a factor for me.

If anyone knows any Fil-Am couples, if you could have them pm me I would be quite grateful. Thanks.

Love that line about trolls living below the bridge.

Cheers,

Craig

Craig, that was my line and Im married to a Filipina who I met online back in 2001 (what a coincidence). She is graduating this semester from the Bay de noc CC extension of Lake Superior State University with a Bachelors in Accounting. We have 3 and 4 year old children so its been a blessing for her to be able to get this degree while allowing her plenty of time with the babies. I am very well connected in the philipino community up here. There are about 15 couples in the Escanaba Delta county area. We also have get togethers once or twice a year with Philipinos and Asians from other communities here in the UP and I'd say the cookout in Iron MT last year had over 100 people. When a new Philipino shows up we usually have some kind of party to do introductions, this was all very comforting to my wife when she first got here. At any rate you can PM me for any info you or your wife may need and my wife and I would be happy to help in any way possible. This way we can exchange E mails and other info. My wifes naturalization ceremony in the summer of 2006 was held at Pictured Rocks, how cool is that.

Thanks, Bryan. I will pm you. What a great conincidence! My wife is exicited to visit now, as are our girls. Hope you are still there when we visit.

With regard to her ceremony at Pictured Rocks, that is way cool indeed. What is her take on the four seasons? Does she manage the cold and snow well? Mine still has reservations, since being married we have never lived in the snow.

Warm regards,

Craig

actually mqt is quite a bit bigger than esky and as far as money I would have to say that there are more people with money in Marquette as it has a major hospital and a university, not to mention the mines, railroad, and prison that all pay very well. Climate, humm-- usually warmer in marquette in the summer (because of the winds) and instead of being 34 and raining marquette will get snow that you can ski, snowshoe or what ever you want to do in the winter.

Oh wow!! Marquette and Escanaba have many pros and cons.

I grew up in Escanaba, only moved away in 05 to Georgia. Marquette is bigger population wise, Marquette has a bit more in the area of attrations vs Escanaba. Marquette has a major hospital, which some believe is superior to the one in Escanaba. (My Grandfather always said he would go see a Veteranarian over going to St. Francis....) Anyway... The populations as a whole are a bit different. Escanaba is composed of many many retiries. Yes their is a mix of generations, but on a whole, I beleive Esky doesnt have the population of College Gen people that marquette does, besides the obvious of NMU being in marq.

As said already, if you dont like a mega ton of snow, dont spend winter in Marq. You will get dumped on!! Esky gets occasional big storms, but nothing like Marq.

Overall I believe that both are a good choice. It all depends on what you are looking for and what your interests are. Escanaba is loaded with bars and dont forget the "Hannah-Vegas". (Casino west of town). Marquette has alot to offer too as far as recreation and as far as shopping, selection is much larger in Marq. vs Esky.

Either or, only you can decide, but they are only roughly an hour drive apart so its not all that hard to check the other out from either place.

Best of luck to you!!

Thats funny, we're moving near there next week and one thing I've noticed (much to my relief) is the general lack of bars. It seems to me that it's the smaller towns that have the greatest number of bars, and that could be one of the reasons people aren't eager to relocate to them. Having lived in two small (population 3,000 +/-) U.P. towns with 4 or 5 or more bars each, I can say it's a real turn-off.
