A little about my fiance and I.....we are currently living in Lima, Ohio (BIG UGH!!!!!). I am originally from a bigger city in upstate NY and he grew up here in NW Ohio. Together, we have visited the U.P. 3 times (he's been there 20+ times throughout his life). We are SERIOUSLY considering a move to the U.P. We have given it thought in the past but, the deciding factor came a few weeks back when a person killed another in front of our house over drug money (BTW, we live in one of the few GOOD neighborhoods here). I fell in love with the U.P. the minute I drove over the bridge! (And, past St. Ignace...too crowded, lol). We are very down to earth, humble people. Love nature and everything it has to offer. We don't mind cold, snowy winters. We are looking for that perfect spot where people are social but, not up your whoopsie daisy and in your business all of the time. The 2 things we noticed about people in the U.P. were people ACTUALLY SMILED and said HI!!! And, didn't always have a cellphone attached to their head! Not to mention, we only heard ONE car with the bass so loud you couldn't hear yourself think and that was in the Soo. The Soo, for us, is out of the question. I can't remember the posters name but, they were absolutely correct when they said the Soo is a close-minded, wannabe big city. I was absolutely SHOCKED when a motorist honked at me and flipped me off for driving the speed limit! LOL. I could not believe I was in the U.P. at that moment! It was just like I was here. Nowhere else in the U.P. did we ever experience anything of the like! People are great there! The culture is great, the real estate is cheap, the scenery is everything you could imagine....hardwoods that seem to reach Heaven, lakes that go forever, spectacular waterfalls, awesome wildlife, etc..........the U.P. has EVERYTHING we want out of life.....Our main concern is jobs (of course). Like a lot of others, we are veering more towards the Marquette area. I know Newberry has a prison and Marquette has job oppurtunities but, I wonder.....1. How easy would it be to find a job (no particular industry or field) and 2. How secure are people in their jobs in that area? ie: Do businesses stay for long periods of time or are they mostly fly-by-nights?
Thanx so much for listening to my rambling! And, Thank you for any replies!
I am living proof that you can take the girl out of the city AND the city out of the girl!!! LOL!

As many people have said, jobs would be tough. The reason u dont see too many people with cell phones glued to their ears is because its hard to get a signal up there. My mother has a cottage and phone service stops after you cross the bridge. The scenery is awesome up there expecially in the fall! Amazing! Check out the waterfalls too. I have some pics somewhere. Maybe buy a small motel or something to cater to vacationers or hunters. A friend of mine lived up there for a few yrs running a small bar. She wanted to make it more of it more than whiskey beer joint but the locals didnt like that idea. She made enough money to keep the lights on. She said she was lonely. Tons of snow and she found herself shoveling her roof often. lol.

I can tell you of soooo many people who moved to the up because they wanted to get away from it all and then turned and left becasue life in the emptyness of the up is not what it was in their mind.
No work, nothing to do, everything costs more. It takes a special person to live in the up mostly antisocial. As for find a motel? the hunters are down, and tourists are down. So I have heard of some very good deals on motels but this aint becasue people are hitting the silk and dropping in to buy up rooms.
If you love snow cold, and being by your self this may be the place for you.

Fallingwater: I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It probably would be a bummer to move anyplace where you have no friends and, are alone. Thanx for the advice on buying a motel but, I think I'll pass on that lol. I found a job, in my field (nursing), and think I will stick with it Also, I've seen quite a few people in MQT with cellphones....just not NEAR as much as in Lima, Ohio lol. I'd look out my window at night and see a bouncing blue light and wonder what the heck it was.....then I'd realize it was someone walking with their cell LOL.
Stuntmanmike: I dunno why so many people are under the delusion that there's 'no' work in the U.P. There might not be AS MUCH work as other places but, there's also not as many people. So, far, we love the U.P. We wouldn't dream of being anywhere else (except Alaska or Germany lol). There is PLENTY to do here. For the love of all things good and bad, at 32 yrs. old, I went sleigh riding for the first time in 17 or so yrs. recently lol. I had more fun doing that than I ever did walking any 3 story mall or standing in an endless line at the amusement park. The best thing was, it was FREE People should try to find their inner child and have more fun. Ya might be a li'l more optimistic about life As for being by myself, I'm not. I have a significant other, 'children' (4-legged ones) and, we have met a few friends already.....Well, with the exception of JEEG LOLOLOL. Hehehe, just busting your chops Jeegaroo :P So, I'm not alone I suppose, it wouldnt be very fun here if you were completely alone. I don't think being completely alone anywhere would be very fun.
Jeeg, check YOUR email LOL.

Oh sorry, I didnt realize you are a Nurse, I somehow overlooked that, well medical is always good. You have many options from offices to homecare if needed. If nature is where you want to be, the U.P. is it. It is very beautiful there, well if you can take the winters. Wow, I wonder what cell service people have up there. I had nextel and Verizon, both didnt work for me. Munsing if I spelled that right is nice. We saw castle rock a few yrs ago, but I heard it finally fell into the lake. Did anyone hear this?

I wouldn't know what cell service they have lol. I've seen several cell places in MQT though. No, Castle Rock didn't fall into the lake lol but, yes, part of it did.....I think it was the right turet....one of the turets anyways lol. Sooner or later, it all will. That's just nature for ya And, it's Munising The U.P. really is a great place to be. I love all seasons. Yeah, winter's a bit long up here but, it's a small price to pay. I've never lived in a safer feeling part of the country. They take excellent care of the roads up here. There's a few that get neglected but, for the most part, they clear them right quick after a snow fall. All in all, the U.P. REALLY fits us. I have no complaints so far

Alltell is the best cell phone coverage up here. We don't even have land lines at our house (haven't for years).

I would have to agree on cell phones. The UP has a few dead spots, but , over all , the service is better than in lower Michigan ( rural). I have Alltell wireless on my lap top , and it works fine, all around Marquette. The Holiday Inn has the fastest internet ever. I was up for the Holidays, and just got back today, where here in SW Mi. , we have no wireless at all, just a lot of snow.........got to go plow now , in the dark !

I would never, ever recommend living in the UP. It is nice to visit if the weather is nice or you don't mind a nine month long winter, but the simple fact of the matter is that unless you have a high in demand skill, in the medical field for example, you will not be able to support yourself. I am 25 and I have been trying to find a job that will pay a living wage and I can't find one. It is rediculous. I would move, but I have no idea where to go. The UP can be very pretty and compared to a lot of places is relatively safe, but not a place to live if you don't want to be living hand to mouth all of your life.

The UP is like almost anywhere else, if things are not going well , try elsewhere, thats what roads an cars are for. Develop a plan , and stick with it, you will see.......
If I were 25 again, I would not want to be stuck in the UP ether. One must travel far , experience new ways , and opportunities , make your way in life work for you , become happy , then , when the time is right......go back home, you will have earned it.....
