I was lucky enough to put him through school for two years but now its up to him to take out loans however he cannot afford housing and school so I thought if we moved to houghton i could supply his housing and he can go on at MTU. My job is looking less secure than ever (auto industry) and am being offered an out that would leave me debt free with some change in the bank to start over but health insurance is an issue. i have worked numerous service jobs, fiberglass boat manufacturing and currently automotive industry. so is there any jobs with insurance, is it true that the nearest airport is 400 miles away (have daughter in florida) and are there any single woman in th 30 to 50 year age. and torrid i'm glad things have worked for you best of luck!

Hey doomsday Thank you very kindly for the WW I live on 'base'. By 'base' I mean K.I. Sawyer. It is approximately 5 miles north of Gwinn. There is an operational airport about 5 mins. from my front steps. They have flights everyday and direct flights to quite a few major cities such as Chicago, Detroit, etc. So, if your daughter flew into one of those cities, she'd be able to be commuted here with no problem. Houghton is about 2 1/2 hrs. from here. For some reason I was thinking there was another airport west of here but, I'm not certain about that. If she checks Priceline, and gets her ticket well in advance, she COULD fly round-trip for about 100 buckaroos. A good friend of mine just got a plane ticket to Ft. Myers, FLA and back and it cost her $104 total. As for health insurance 'sigh sigh sigh'.....I work fulltime for a home health agency and don't have any The co. says they can't afford it. However, the perk to that is, right from day 1, I've been able to take any day and any amount of days off that I want, when I want......Personally, I'd rather the health insurance LOL. They do try to make up for not offering health insurance though. So, kudos to them. Now, their biggest competitor here DOES offer insurance but, I haven't heard very good things about them. I guess, in a situation like this, ya weigh the good n the bad. For now, I'm staying where I am. Unfortunately, I can't tell ya about any other industries. Maybe if ya do some checking??? Maybe you could find a place that offers insurance.....Maybe not right away but.....maybe?!?! Hehehe. Have a good day

There is a small airport near Ironwood and a regional airport in Rhinelander, WI which is just 30 or so miles from the U.P., also.
Single women? Oh yes, and lots of them would be more than happy to meet you, Doomsday.
How nice, Torrid and Jeeg, that you guys are forming an offline friendship!

Don't let this die yet!!! :P
I am moving to the UP in the near future! Have an appointment with a realtor in Ironwood Mid April... Is anyone from the area reading these ever? I'd love some information about the High School if anyone could offer any details. Oh and as far girls go... from what I have read there are more girls than guys there in that age bracket!

I shall sentence myself to 50 lashes with a wet noodle!! I owe her an email response and haven't gotten to it yet (my email program is on a different computer that I hardly ever turn on).
We did all meet (my family, her and her fiance) at Big Boy shortly after those posts were made and had a good time.

Sault Ste Marie sucks in general. I live here for school, but am leaving because people are very rude, unless you have been here for awile and they know you. There is a split between people with money and no money. I am from Traverse City, MI (great area but the way, but not for jobs) and have never experienced this rudness if you do not "look" like you have money in some stores.
Funny about your car story because when I moved up here, where I usually had to drive a few over the speed limit I got ran off the road twice!!! I have never had this experience since though. I could not believe how aggressive people were, when they generally do not even go the speed limit!!
Move to the Western UP. More college opportunities and you can get a job at Burger King easily and work until you find something good. Making $8.00 an hour for both of you, you will not live paycheck to paycheck. Also, if you are close to Wisconsin you can always work in a bigger town there and commute. You are getting into the midwest and they have ethanol so gas is a bit cheaper.
Good luck with whatever you decide, but do not move to Detroit-Grand rapids area. These are going down hill with crime and jobs. Nothern MI and UP MI is the place to live.
