Jacquart Fabrics manufactures a number of items including the "Stormy Kromer" cap that is famous in the western U.P. and northern Wisconsin. There is also a plastics manufacturing company, but I can't remember the name of it.
A newspaper link that I read is: ironwoodglobe.com
Good luck finding your own piece of paradise in the U.P. I can't wait till I get mine!
I know, I'm replying to an old post, but I just noticed it. The Plastics manufacturing company in Ironwood is Ironwood Plastics, and I've worked there as a "temp" for the past 2 years. The pay is poor for the company employees as compared to the same job in metropolitan areas, starting at around $8.00 an hour, but the work isn't difficult and the people are very pleasant. Anyone with any tooling or engineering experience would be welcomed, although I must add that there has been a work slowdown in recent weeks and my own hours (as a temp) were cut to 24 per week.
The website is : http://www.ironwood.com/

I'm from the E.U.P. and my question is "What jobs?" The economy here is horrible and most advertised jobs are in the food service. I was lucky to find a job in my small town and one that pays above min. wage (It's only a dollar above, but hey).

Ahh, I see. Best of luck to you, both.
I too dream of living in a quaint town surrounded by mountains, pines, and beautiful nature.
Be it in the U.P., or Upstate NY. But the UP looks more attractive because it's economy is better ...as hard as it is to believe.

Ohhhh, yes...The Catskills are BEAUTIFUL but, I would never live in NY again. The cost of living is getting pretty high there. Most of my family still lives there and always suggests I move back but, no way! LOL....I'm U.P.-bound, one way or the other

Adirondack? They're even more beautiful....I LOVE the Lake George and Lake Placid areas. One of my biggest memories as a child was going to Lake George for the 4th of July......and, going to (what used to be ) The Great Escape

Haha, yes! Lake George is absolutely gorgeous. I love how you can look in one direction, see a beautiful clear lake, and look behind you and there rises a breathtaking thousand-foot mountain.

Ahhh.
