The UP is great. We bought our own business in the middle of the Hiawatha National forest almost 9 years ago. You really have to buy your job up here if you want a stable life. We can walk 10 miles out our back yard and never run across a road. We have loved every minute of living up here but we must relocate to get closer to my aging parents. We hate to leave but we will be back! Please write us for any more information we know what it's like to move up here and try to make it.

Thunder Lake, What sort of business did you start and operate? What was your nearest town? Not that I'm looking to do anything like that.....but it sounds like you have a very interesting story. Did you move there from a similar climate?

Are you in the western section of the forest or the eastern?

The property was closed down and in very bad shape but it was one of the few full log buildings left that was built somewhere in the 1930's with a cabin next to it so that we could live right next door. It was a bar and many things but most recently had been operated as a store. Look up our website

We are in between Manistique approx 26 miles and Munising approx 30 plus miles. We moved from St. Petersburg, Florida after being down there for 28 years! We are so glad we did this and have never been back to that crazy state.

That sounds great Thunder! Nothing like finding your own little piece of Heaven! I wish you didn't have to leave. I may get in contact with ya. It seems like it'll be forever before we get to move.....Cross your fingers and say a prayer that someone will buy my house LOL!

I remember when you guys bought that store - we were living in Munising then & often took drives around the Forest. Thunder Lake is a beautiful area, lots of pines and sandy soil.
(I seem to remember your having a white dog in the store???)
I'm so sorry you have to sell out. Good luck!

Default Thunder Lake~~~~~~~~~

Without asking you for details, I was wondering if you would advise someone to take the plunge like you did & buy a General Store in a tourist area? It's been an idea my husband & I have toyed with for years, and we even went as fas as to talk with the couple who were selling the Melstrand Store some years ago, and with the people who bought Curly's Hilltop Grocery outside of Munising. After hearing what they had to say, we put the idea on the shelf. In both cases, there was little to no profit on the books and the owners actually lost money by having to buy their own health insurance as well as insure the business and keep the property maintained. Just wondering what your opinion might be on the whole idea.

I've been wondering how Torrid is doing, also.
Good luck, Clutch. Now is the time to make your move - it's a buyers market and there are homes for sale in my area for as little as six grand. I'm not saying they're great homes, but it's a start. Shoot, our own home has been for sale for about 8 months now. Go for it!!!

I'm not sure if she still posts on here but I'm in fairly regular email contact with her. She and her fiance moved up here (about 15 miles away) back in September. They are both doing real good and seem to be happy here.
I just got a new computer and screwed up my email account setting it up. Once I get it working again I'll send her a note to come post here!!
