Default Moving to Grand Rapids

Does anybody know of a decent neihborhood in which a Canadian couple and their dog can rent a house or suite? We are moving in the new year and I haven't been able to find very much info yet. I am studying law at Thomas M. Cooley, my better half is a nurse and our dog is a pug. We are looking for areas close to hospitals, but a short commute to downtown GR.

Can anybody help us?

Any place that lets you have dogs is gonna cost quite a bit more than standard apartments and you'll have far less to pick from.

Try Apartments.com - Free Nationwide Apartment Search with the Most Visual Rental Listings Online.. It's a good start and offers pics/virtual tours of apartments and all the housing stats/contact info you need!

You might also take a weekend to just drive around GR (if you're coming from somewhere in Ontario, GR isn't that far away). There are a lot of "For rent" signs in front yards of homes in Heritage Hill (which would be perfect...walk downtown, walk to Spectrum Health and St. Mary's, bus access, etc.). It's a great location.

I agree with suydam. Heritage Hill is probably the best place to start. Beautiful neighborhood and a great mix of owner-occupieds and rentals, and just a short walk from Spectrum Health's main hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and downtown.

Heritage Hill Neighborhood Association, Grand Rapids, Michigan
(rental and sales listings tab on the left side)

I also see signs for rentgr.com. You might try there.

What price range?

Thanks to suydam and magellan. We are looking for anything between $500 and $1000/month that would accept a small dog. I've been looking in the Heritage Hill area online for January 1, 2008 and haven't found anything yet...

If I could secure something from Calgary it would save a trip, but I have a feeling that I may need to fly in to find a place before then....

It seems like you should have no problem finding something in that price range for what you are looking for. I'll get in touch with a guy I know who handles a lot of rental properties near downtown and see what he says.

Here's another one that I see their signs around downtown:

Lighthouse Property Management - Grand Rapid's Largest Property Management Company - Welcome To Our Web Page

I can't vouch for them, so carpe diem.

If you plan to stay awhile, you could buy. Its a great time to find an excellent deal. There is also a shortage of nurses so your wife will make good money and what city can't use more lawyers.

Hello,
I am currently looking to move to Canton, MI soon. Are there any suggestions on where to start looking?

I'd start by posting a new thread....this one is titled "Moving to Grand Rapids" and you're not likely to get the full attention of people in or near Canton without your own thread.

Just a suggestion.
