We have been gone for 3 months now, let me tell you, we are blessed to be getting a nice paycheck once again and to be able to feel great once again, it just sucks when you loose your job after working for 17 years without a gap in betweeen. Plenty of work here and we are just loving the temperatures, nice sunny days and a little bit on the chilly side at night. I will miss the north and maybe we'll be back someday.
But for now, god bless Michigan and all other states that are struggling.
Where exactly did you move to? Down to a Southern state or out west to Arizona/CA/Nevada areas? (Those two areas are where most people are heading it seems)

They are older, everything is tied up in thier homes (which are worth almost nothing - though taxed on some imaginary, out of reality, astronomical number that some idiot thief made up).
Well, I know what you are going through...it's what I did a few years ago when I headed for Chicago. I'm not suggesting you go there (Lord no!) but I am gonna ease your mind on a certain things, if only because EVERYONE must deal with these issues:

1) YES, you will miss your family and if you move VERY far away, you may not be able to see them except maybe once a year...perhaps longer. HOWEVER, since you are at least married, you won't be venturing out into a new state ALONE, which is quite daunting.

2) YES, looking for work outside of the state is VERY expensive & time consuming. This is the only way I can think of doing a long-distance move where a few-hour long car-ride won't get you there (and really, the only states nearby are Ohio, Indiana and Illinois...states I'd REALLY avoid): You should send out your info ALL OVER the country using Monster, Career Builder, Craigslist, etc.....don't be state selective, shove them EVERY PLACE imagineable.

Let potential employers know that you are willing to be interviewed but only if they foot the bill completely for the interview and if they cover part or all of your moving expenses. YES, this will radically reduce your chances but even if only 1% of the companies you aim for take you up on this, you can almost bet your job is guaranteed (afterall, why would a company buy plane tickets, pay for hotels, etc. if they weren't super interested???). You might be living in Idaho instead of California or Florida but you know what? A good job is better than NO job or a job that is going nowhere fast.

3) YES, moving out of state is VERY expensive. If you have a house now in Michigan, it'll be even more expensive when you're paying a mortgage until it sells and rent/mortgage in a new place as well. I'd suggest having a few thousand dollars at least at your disposal when a move might happen.

I don't see very many companies agreeing to do this, unless you are a Physicist, Biochemist, Physician needed for a small town, or some other highly sought after person. Why would a company pay you to come out to interview if you're just some office schlub or engineer that can be found in any city?

Yes, it will radically reduce your responses...to zero. In fact, I've heard that in many areas in the South, new transplants are having a hard time finding jobs because companies like to hire locally before they hire newcomers (unless of course it's a position that is very hard to find locally).

Just check out any of the other forums on this site about transplants having a hard time finding jobs in North Carolina, Georgia, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and other states.

Well, you can either try and HOPE for a company to be interested or not try and have ZERO chance of a company out of state working out. It's up to you. Try and HOPE or Don't and MOPE.

And just so you know, this IS possible for regular people because my brother who is aheating & cooling guy w/ no education beyond High School was being flown out to Vegas/Reno & California because of all the housing/building stuff going on. Not to be harsh, but he's not anything super special in his field, he simply has about 5-10 years of experience and apparently, in that field in that part of the country those types of workers are in high demand.

If you are relatively inexperienced in your field I wouldn't expect this to happen. I would think you'd have to have 7-10+ years experience before companies would attempt this with you.

That's why I said try ALL OVER and don't limit yourself to any area. Even saying "I'm only gonna try for jobs out west" may prove to be TOO limiting.

If you have ZERO luck with this then you best start saving up thousands and thousands of dollars and move somewhere you want and then scramble to find work before your money runs out.

This company has done more for me and my family than any other big 3 in Michigan in the last 17 plus years working up there. We also did love the summers and the lakes but enough is enough, I can't feed my family on unemployment checks that you only get for 6 months, Michigan has no extentions on unemployment money. Like I said before we left family and friends but, my dearly friends are not going to pay my bills and feed my family. We were lucky to have sold our home back in March, walked out of selling our home with only $4000 to payoff my car, for that we are thankful and blessed, but we lost so much money that I don't even want to think about it anymore.
If you get a chance to move, then do it, once you are out you can see how happier you can be, specially if you go to a place with more sunny days. The economy is pretty good down here, it's a small place with lots of to do. I have not had to fight any traffic or have to deal with bad roads that are always in some kind of construction. Some say that the grass isn't always greener on the other side but for us it is very green. I hope and pray for the rest of people up there that have to deal with trying to get a job that their lives will get better soon, but after reading the local Michigan paper and seen the 10,000 more jobs that are about to disappear, it just made my stomach turn. Michigan will alway have a special place in my heart and hope to visit some time in the future or maybe move back when the dust of all of those who are leaving settles.

Have to agree. Also, the atmosphere out here is so much fun!! It is so positive, people are smiling and happy because they can afford to live.

OMG, sounds like paradise! Hook me up with another martini!

What a bunch of crap. How about the people who don't want to deal blackjack or sell homes? How's the job market out there?

Ok read the post..C-O-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N,you know that stuff that happens when you build, let's see you equate blackjack and realtors,so how about this, plumbers, pipefitters, electricians, ironworkers (structural and rods),excavator's,carpenter's laborer's,insulator's,crane operators, surveyor's,project manager's,engineer's,glazier's,finisher's,tin-knocker's(that's sheet metal for some of you that don't know)Elevator constructors(they make about 49 an hour on the check) so yeah, from my perspective, there's a little more than pushing houses and dealing one eyed jacks.

Well jeez, that's the answer. Let's build more casinos in Michigan. You won't win this argument with me. Vegas is a dung-heap of a town (and yes, I have ventured off of the strip and seen the rest of the metro area).
