How can six million Canadians own guns if they're "all...totally banned"? Is is illegal for a non-citizen to bring a handgun across the border into Canada, but the last time I checked, under certain very strict guidelines, various long guns were permitted passage, even by non-citizens.
Been a while since I reviewed the laws though. Things might've changed. Perhaps a Canadian observer to this site would be so kind as to throw some light this-a-way.

The problem is , if you declare , before you are asked, then they will work something out. Its the attempt to defraud or conceal , that gets you in trouble.Even if you don't mean to.... many hunters go into Canada every day , and , bring their rifles ....no hand guns. If , you stop at US Customs first , and ,declare what you are taking out of the Country , they will inspect , put a customs seal on it , and, Canadian Customs will let you thru , without checking further. I did that with a box of Cigars. Sort of like being in bond.

Thanks darstar, that's what I thought. That's the way I remember it years ago when some friends of mine and me used to hunt there. As long as you declare, and your purpose is "legitimate", all would be well.

Whoa! Easy there. I wouldn't say the posts you have spoken of are way off the subject. They are legitimate concerns if Michigan did leave the union. A Union 14,753 brave Michiganders died for in the civil war.
Deaths of Union Forces, by State
Look as an outsider with a family that owns property in Michigan. Let me tell you the big reason why Michigan will not be allowed to leave the U.S. It's all about control of those Great lakes. 1. They are a source of great revenue for this country of our even if if the auto industry is going to hell. 2. They hold 20% of the worlds fresh water reserves. You are going to see lack of drinking water in this country soon if Global warming is true. He's a little article for thought about the so lack of water America and other part of the world may face.

Don't be too surprise somewhere in the near future that Michigan get a large influx of people from around the country because of lack of water supply.

Do you think Grandho is trying to make Michigan part of Canada? She's going to need to knock down the crime though.

To clarify about guns in Canada: Just go to the Canadian Firearms Centre Site - Firearm users visiting Canada
Statistics: Quick Facts about the Canadian Firearms Program as of March 2007
Basically, there are three classes of firearms - non-restricted, restricted and prohibited. There is a declaration form that you can download and give to the customs officer if you want to enter Canada with a non-restricted or restricted gun.
Not all guns are banned in Canada -- otherwise, why can American hunters go there? These guys most likely declared their hunting rifles properly. I mean, think about the economy up north -- what are the three F's of Canadian history? Fish, Furs, and Forests. They'd never ban guns. The handgun that the guy had in his glove box probably was prohibited. I am not going to go into the details as the above site indicates what's permitted and what isn't. But some handguns are allowed.
The most recent firearms registry lists about 7,158,114 registrations of firearms from individuals and businesses. Of course, this doesn't include those arms that still haven't been registered. There are about 2 million licenses granted.
With regards to the discussion about Michigan becoming part of Canada -- it's pretty ludicrous. Although I have to say that while I lived and worked in Michigan, I enjoyed it very much and I don't have bad memories or experiences of the place like some people have been saying in other discussions.

Would Canada have the option to not include Detroit? Why would they want it?
