This thread is a good start. I think there is an underling desire for Statehood , but , its sort of like UFOs......most of us believe they exist, but , don't wanted to be quoted....
I wonder if the UP could get a territory status , instead of statehood ? More federal aid is granted to territories than states ....
The most practical approach, seems to me , would be for the UP to BUY their independence. Michigan is broke , it needs income , and the leaders just can't seem to find a way out of the deep hole we are in.......We have a deal for you ! Michigan sells off the UP for cash dollars . I think the LP would go for it , considering todays economic environment .

Default Let's Hear From the Lawyers

From a constitutional law standpoint, can any attorney out there tell us exactly what would have to happen to make this a reality?

Michigan had Toledo? That would be nice if Michigan keep the UP, and also had part of Ontario all the way to the end of Toronto and diag to Sudbury, then connecting to Sault Ste. Marie ... it would mean the mitten would be sorta circle by the up and the other side of the state. Then Michigan would really be a interesting state.

Interesting...I didn't know that! So was the UP sort of a "no man's land" before it became part of Michigan?

[The UP] was described in a federal report of the time as a "sterile region on the shores of Lake Superior destined by soil and climate to remain forever a wilderness".[1]
Upper Peninsula of Michigan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Before the war I think it was populated mostly by Native Americans (in significant numbers but I dunno how many... does anyone know?), and white Americans mostly journeyed there for fur trading. Within a few decades after the war, the region supplied most of the USA's copper.

The Houghton metro region had around 100,000 people at its peak, like a century ago (just before the brutal strike in 1913, when population started to decline), and now has around 35-40 thousand people.

Wisconsin gave the UP to Michigan for nothing...

lets split the UP in half West = WI , East = MI
-Western UP is Packerland and just like the Wisconsin Northwoods
-HighScool Football teams play eachother accross the boarder
-the split would make a logical time zone line
-Western UP as Wisconsin would expand the WI snowmobile trails and help that part of the UP with more visitors
-drives to the capital would be equal for Yoopers: MI or WI
-How about the fact the UP is connected to WI

Really a wiscosnin annexation of the UP - at least Western UP (this way WI doesn't have to bother with the Canooks directly) is the best solution.

Default Up

Although the UP is a lot like Canada in terms of the way it looks, etc., it seems ridiculous that they would make it part of Canada. Michigan is different and unique because of it's lp and up and the lakes surrounding it. The people living in the up are American and proud of it, i'm sure, and would probably want to move to the lp if they changed the up to Canada because of their American roots and pride.
