So in scouring the net for apartments in TC I've really only found a few complexes that have websites. Fine, it's a small town I get that. But even the sites I've found don't always post their rent prices. Ok, I'll keep checking the Record Eagle for listings. But even then rent isn't always listed. Why is the price of rent such a mystery up there? I've never seen anything like it and I've lived in a lot of places.

Is this a case of "if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it"?

In my searches for apartments, I have found that some freely display their rates, possibly to weed out the "riffraff" and keep them from phoning. When a landlord doesn't offer prices up front, it often means they want to talk to you, screen you for "attitude" and budgetary means, and maybe give you a sales pitch. That's the only reasons I can come up with. In other words, not displaying prices just forces interested parties to make a call - which would seem to be the goal.

Why don't you contact rentals and ask for rent prices? It seems like a better route than asking here. Anybody still listing in the newspaper is probably old fashioned and expects a good phone conversation, anyway. If you want to live here, you'll have to try a little harder than relying on the paper.

I didn't ask anyone here for rent prices, I simply wondered why they aren't commonly listed even on well developed web sites. It seems strange, that's all.

Usually that's not a good way to achieve the goal though. When I am looking for apartments (or hotels), if there is no price listed I'll just assume it's shady and skip it, then keep looking elsewhere. I imagine a lot of other people do this too.

Agreed. On a basic level, lack of up-front vital information suggests something to hide.

Or a "what the traffic will bear" rate in a lowish supply/high demand market......

If you are looking for a apartment in TVC, wait until after labor day. Suggestion number two, make a call!
