I don't know how much traffic this board gets but hopefully you guys can help me.

I am in the process of finding work in Michigan and will be moving by November 1st at the latest. Based on the areas where I have the best chance of getting employment, Kalamazoo/Portage seems to be the best area. My boyfriend and I are looking for a house or apartment with two bedrooms, takes cats, and has plenty of storage. I grew up just east of Kalamazoo but have not spent much time in the residential areas of the city. I know that some parts of Kalamazoo can be dangerous but I'm not sure where exactly those areas are.

Can anyone tell me any neighborhoods/areas that are good or to stay away from?

Have you had any particularly good or bad experiences with apartment complexes?

Due to my past experiences, I am VERY paranoid about dealing with bed bugs again. Have you heard of any bed bug infestations in any apartments in Kalamazoo/Portage?

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, it is MUCH appreciated.

The seedy areas of Kazoo are immediately north and south of downtown with addresses up to about 2000 or so.
