Has anyone else noticed how CHEAP homes are in Ironwood as of lately? We have come across a dozen or more actual homes for under $15,000.00! There is one for sale right now for $6900.00. What is the deal in this area? We currently live in Munising and are thinking of relocating to the Ironwood area,(closer to family in WI), but what gives? Also, has anyone noticed that most local newspapers do not list "for sale by owner" homes anymore? I've noticed this in the Mining Journal as well as the Globe out of Ironwood. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Went to the tax sale in Ironwood a coupla months ago and it was amazing. Bessemer is another hard hit area, as is Ontonagon county it seemed. MI has such an anti business gov't, combined with current high transportation costs, the UP is being left with the short straw in this crazy economy. great for retirees with a decent income, all others, not so good. I am blessed with a decent retirement, and it is good here, but... it is hard work living here, the climate makes for more work than, say, living in New Mexico, where I retired from. I went away for 20 years, and it was nice, in some ways, to come back to no earthshaking changes, as the rest of the country, it seems has seen.

Ive spent alot of time in ironwood bessemer wakefield area and its great. not alot of high paying jobs but you can find work, how much money do you need to make if your house payment is 150$ a month. just outside of town is the beautiful porcupine mountains with skiing hiking hunting and fishing. Also immediatly outside of ironwood is hurley wisconsin a very fun little party town

Hi All.. I am currently living and working at the va medical center in sheridan, wyoming. I am retiring and moving from sheridan and buying a home in ironwood in june of 2011. iron wood seems like a nice place to live. I am not looking for paradise but from I have researched it seems to have what I have been looking for such as affordable homes, outdoor recreation and a safe place to call home.. looking foward to meeting the good folks in ironwood in the summer of 2011

My guess, after much research, the houses are in dire need of repair and many on the verge of being condemned.
For those thinking there are great deals, the cost of tearing those homes down are twice the cost you see listed and most probably more.
Always invest in a house inspector AND a building inspector before you buy.
You'll be glad you did.
