9 months of cold? That is the largest load of BS I have seen posted in a LONG time. So what you are saying as that it gets cold in Aug/Sept, and doesn't warm up until May/June. If you mean 80+ maybe, if you mean 65 or 70+ then you are not even close. 9 months of cold, lets see the data. I can post pages of data showing you are wrong, but let's see what you have to prove your point. (Holland was 70's the first week of November and 57 today, which at the end of winter feels quite warm.)

Economy; not the best, but not horrible either. Have you looked at other places lately? West Michigan is not doing too badly right now compared to many places around the country right now.
Dear Bydand,

I'm happy for you if you fit in with the Holland folks. Where do the warm and friendly people hang out? I'm just reporting my experience. I have lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, and Holland has just been the hardest social nut for me to crack. Yes, it's those 30% I'm speaking of. I would agree that the warm and friendly folks lie mostly in the other 70% that come from outside the native Dutch, who possess a combination of smugness and paranoia.

I did exaggerate about the cold; the daily average is mostly under 50 degrees for only 7 months of the year. So I guess Canadians might find that shirtsleeve weather while Southerners would likely find that on the chilly side.

Most people would consider an area to be overall friendly if 70% of the people were that way, and a minority were indifferent. So overall you are saying you found the majority of the people friendly and warm, but want to dwell on the ones who were not?? Sounds like a miserable way to go through life.

Actually you are still grossly exaggerating the duration of cold weather. Using your number of 50 degrees: The 1st day the average is above 50 is March 27th and the last day the average temp is above 50 Nov. 6th. That is 255 days or 7 months 11 days. Unless you use some weird calendar I have never heard of, that is less than 5 months UNDER 50 like you claim. Who said anything about Southerners claiming the weather is one way or the other? Using that logic we could trot out the Inuits and claim every day of the year is warm, or use someone from Africa and claim every day is cold. We are posting on a MICHIGAN board and you are making comments about MICHIGAN weather. Not whether it is colder or warmer than some Southern location, that is a foolish argument and statement to make.

You don't like the area, get on with life and move on.

Default I rest my case

Dear Bydand,

Wow. With your angry replies, I am wondering what else is going on in your life that you are posting anonymous rants to someone you don't know. I wish you well during these tough times.

However, your replies support my argument that your 30% of the population is harboring such nasty bile against anyone who is not from around here or who has separate points of view. Do you see how you are confirming my stereotype? Your blunt, pointed, and ham-fisted attacks are not doing your people any favors.

Regarding your angry obsession about the weather, you can can look at the average monthly temperature line (in red) on the chart (at this web site) and see that it doesn't cross the 60 degree mark until the end of May and then descends in September. That's roughly three months.

As much as I would like to continue this fruitful relationship, I regret to say this will be my last response to you. Keep it clean or someone might think that you are a cyber bully.

Best,

Best,
This post violates quite a few Terms of Service here. Since you have offered to leave the forum, I'll leave it at that.

Best,

Wow, nothing like taking things out of context is there. Angry? me? Hardly. I love being here. I am doing better in Michigan than I have anyplace else I have ever lived. And that is Financially, Personally, and in every other aspect of life.

I'm not the one with the obsession about weather. You made some comments that were outright false and I just posted the correct information. Now you change the criteria to prove your point. Whatever.
