Does anyone know if it is common this time of year to be able to view the northern lights from the UP?

We are going to in the UP next week.

I've tried to find a website to give me info as to good viewing "dates" but I am not sure if such an animal exists since the lights are based on so many factors.

thanks in advance

The answer is yes, but only if the sun wants to spit out or not.
This is about the best site to check...

Nephler. Thanks very much for that link!

When they are visible from the UP, do you really have to wait till around midnight or have you seen them earlier in the evening?

When I went to Michigan Tech I saw them a few times. Everyone in the dorms would always run out side to see them.

I would say Houghton, just because theres so much more you can do up there. Like Isle royale and going to the most northern point of michigan. A little touristy thing is to go to the gay bar in gay, mi.

You don't necessarily have to wait until midnight, but it does need to be night. Imagine trying to see faint colors on a light blue sky. if you could see it, you wouldn't enjoy it like at night.

Most of the best northern lights photos we've seen that were taken up here (in both Houghton and Mqt) were taken around 2-3 am, the recommended time for them to be most clear. That said, we've been here a couple of years and haven't seen them yet!

One of the most spectacular displays of the lights I've seen were up in Copper Harbor last year and this is even after living in Alaska for 4 years.
I live a stones through below the Mac bridge and see them quite often, if I'm awake at the time. We're entering into quite an active period for the Aurora, so keep an eye on the website and keep your fingers crossed.

Yup, sometimes you just need too look up at the right time. Both places will put out a great show if the sun is cooperating though.
