Yep agree with everybody else. If you want to be a bit closer to a bigger city, Grand Haven without a doubt. Close enough to take advantage of the amenities of Grand Rapids or Muskegon, but far enough away to avoid the hassles of a bigger city. Plus they have most of the Super stores around town or an even shorter drive to Muskegon for the mall and other stores there as well.

Magellan, thank you for the flickr photo album link! The pics really helped us get an idea of what the area is like.
I do appreciate you all taking the time to help me out!
I'm off to look at real estate in Grand Haven. Just to get an idea of what we can get for our buck. Btw, do any of you guys/gals know where the nearest place to go snowboarding from Grand Haven would be? I mean an actual mountain, somewhere decent. Thanks in advance!

Well the closest actual "mountain" in the lower peninsula of Michigan sense of the word would probably be Cannonsburg Ski Area NE of Grand Rapids. Pando Ski Area also has some snowboard runs and a 1/2 pipe, and it off of Belding Road East of Rockford (not far from Cannonsburg).
Timber Ridge and Bittersweet are down closer to Kalamazoo/Allegan area.
For better skiing, you have to drive 1.5 - 2 hours North to the Traverse City area.

I think we will be looking at real estate online and scheduling some appointments to view homes in Grand Haven and Grand Rapids at the beginning of Jan.
Do any of you know much about St Joseph? Is it similar to Grand Haven?
Sorry for bombarding you all with questions.

Grand Haven is really nice...the coast guard is there so they are pretty much military friendly. It is my escape place. I love it there, there is plenty of night life with alittle bit of home. The lake is right there so you have the beach. I think you would love it.
I however aren't from there...but that is were I go when I need time for me!!!!

you might look at Greenridge Reality. I haven't worked with the office in Grand Haven, but the one I talked with in Ludington area was very professional.

Keep in mind that prices are highly negotiable right now. Be careful that you do not pay 2005 prices. You home value will drop fast enough without paying too much to begin with. The prices/values should eventually come back up, but it may be a while. Keep in mind that waterfront property holds value better (plus it is really nice to live on the water).

Well I am in Kalamazoo/Portage which is really nice. Lots of things to do, Kalamazoo has a lot of college kids as its home to Western Michigan University. And you can snowboard at Bittersweet in Otsego or Timberidge in Gobles. I prefer Bittersweet!!

If you want night life stay in GR...if you like the beach then Grand Haven is a "no brainer"...GR-Grand Haven is 30-40 minutes depending on the weather...Muskegon has a great summer event...concerts (good bands), fair, etc...Holland is VERY reserved and Sagutauck is an alternative friendly area...best choice for someone 26 is GR...go to the beach during the day and come home and have fun at night
