Meijer grocery stores.

OMG... we have a Norman's here in East Tawas that was once a small hole-in-the-wall store stuffed with junk; now it is a huge, green, monstrosity of an eye-sore on the corner of Newman street (the main tourist drag). I HATE Norman's! They follow you around like you're going to steal something and won't accept local checks. The only reason I shop there is because they are the only place locally where you can get a decent coat or pair of boots for a reasonable cost.

I do, however, agree with everyone on Meijer's... I miss them too! We are 1 hour from the closest Meijer in Bay City... whenever I go downstate I make a point of stopping, even if I don't need groceries... you can always find a deal! I got spoiled living in Highland Twp with Meijer just up the road in White Lake... my my my... those were the days...

I agree about hating Normans. I didn't like it when it was in the rat hole of a storefront. They are also in a giant green store now in Gaylord, can't say I've ever been in it myself. Don't plan on it either .

Meijers is really just a regional store. Outside of the Great Lakes states nobody has heard of them unless they have been visiting an area that has them. I miss Meijers as well, but you do have to watch their prices, some things are a great buy, others...not so much. Just like any store. They do have great produce departments usually though. Here is their store locater link: Meijer: Store Locator

We got spoiled having a meijer 2 miles from our old house in Canton and everytime we went to visit my mother in law we went to the one in Westland and then to Joe Randazzos for some good deals on fruit and vegies.
Now living in the middle of the states it is expensive to buy produce and people here have no idea what the heck I am talking about when I mention "produce store". It is just the way that it always has been done so they just go and pay the high prices on apples, watermelons, etc.
You got it, those were the days!!!!!!!

It's so sad, but it's true. Meijer is in only about five states, and based in Michigan. The last sign I saw for Meijer on our drive home was around Columbus, Ohio. After that, nothing.

I keep trying to explain Meijer to people out here. I tell them, "It's like a Wal-Mart Supercenter, only more awesome." They were the greatest thing to have in the small town where I used to live (Three Rivers), since you could buy just about anything under one roof. There's even an older Meijer up in Portage or Kalamazoo that has (or at least had) a barber shop on the second floor. How cool is that?

Great post YoAdrian! Meijer rules! We are there at least 2 - 3 times a week. It feels good that we are also supporting a Michigan company that has given so much back to the community, and giving Wal-Mart a run for their money.

You gotta love that ... giving Wal-Mart some competition. If only Meijer would expand to other states, it could soon take over the world! (Moohahahahaha!) The Walton family would be shaking in their boots. I have no doubt.
