Hello all,

I live in Ann Arbor - spouse in school, good town - and work in Troy. This is not a permanent thing as we plan to move after her school ends by the end of the year but meanwhile I've been making this commute - a hectic one.

I get to work by 8 and leave at 4 so it is manageable...50 minutes to an hour and 15 each way. I make this commute usually going through M14-I96-Davison-I75N and exactly the opposite coming back home. However with the I96 shutdown I'm scared of the commute home. I hate I696 during 4:30 ish going onto 275... and was wondering if there are any good way of getting back home without all that stress in stop and go. Would I75-I94 work best during those hours? or is there some way I'm not aware of? I would greatly appreciate it if you share some thoughts. Thanks!

I'd suggest playing around with potential routes on mapquest.com . That will give you the distance and approximate drive times. There's no easy answer if you wish to avoid I-696--the closure of I-96 is going to impact a lot of people.

I know someone who communtes from Lake Orion to M-14, almost to Ann Arbor. They have a crazy communte, too. That's sure not for me!

You'd be surprised how fast it can be from Troy to just take 75 South to Eile Mile and go west. It's 45mph the entire way (on 8 mile) and most lights are timed really well so you rarely have to stop at a red light. Eight Mile is 4 lanes in each direction so traffic really moves. I dare you to take it this week and report back. So for you that's M14 to 275 to 8 mile to 75 to Troy.

This will be interesting, but I suspect, the I-96 closure will push a lot more traffic on to I-696 which is already bad as it is.

I'd consider I-94 to I-75 in some shape or form:

I-94 to I-75
I-94 to M-10 to Davison to I-75
I-94 to M-39 to I-96 to Davison to I-75
I-94 to M-39 to 8 Mile to I-75

It will be interesting to see how this changes the flow of traffic. I will say though if you can adjust your schedule to start/leave 30 minutes earlier like be there at 7:30 and leave by 3:30 that will help significantly to beat the rush.

Not in the morning. Most of the morning eastbound M14/I96 traffic is going downtown or to Dearborn. I275 south and I94 east is going to see a lot more traffic.

The traffic that comes from the northwest on I-96 down I-275 and east on I-96 will likely move to I-696 east and use some combination of M-10, M-39, or even I-75. Traffic primarily from Novi, and western Oakland County.

The Plymouth, Canton, Ann Arbor traffic that uses M-14 to I-96 will likely move to I-94. Some will likely just use Ford Rd or Michigan Ave, at least that headed for Dearborn.

94 around downtown is a supreme cluster most days. As was previously suggested, I would seriously look at 8 Mile.

Also consider Pontiac Trail to 8 Mile to Beck to 12 Mile to Telegraph to Square LAke into Troy. I believe you would be going opposite the heavy traffic flow and might avoid the congestion from Troy to 8 Mile along I-75..
My brother commutes from Troy to Downriver and does the Square LAke to Telegraph drive to avoid the I-75 cluster.

I live in Ypsilanti and worked in Pontiac and Warren for 12 years. The best route from Troy to the Ann Arbor area is I-75 South to I-696 West to I-275 South to M-14 West. I actually felt M-14 was far more treacherous due to crazy drivers than I-696 ever was.

Square Lake to Telegraph to I-696 may be a benefit depending upon where in Troy you work.
