Metro area unemployment rates for December 2013 and year-over-year change.

Detroit-Warren-Livonia: 8.0% (-2.2%)

Grand Rapids-Wyoming: 5.6% (-0.7%)

Kalamazoo-Portage: 6.8% (-0.5%)

Monroe: 7.1% (-0.5%)

Holland-Grand Haven: 5.9% (-0.5%)

Niles-Benton Harbor: 8.3% (-0.5%)

Battle Creek: 6.6% (-0.4%)

Flint: 8.8% (-0.3%)

Jackson: 8.0% (-0.2%)

Muskegon-Norton Shores: 8.1% (-0.2%)

Saginaw-Saginaw Township North: 8.1% (-0.2%)

Ann Arbor: 5.2% (no change)

Bay City: 8.3% (no change)

Michigan overall: 8.4% (-0.5%)

Overall, the state is heading in the right direction although quite a few cities still have pretty high rates. Detroit's, however, is dropping like a rock after having peaked in 2009 at 15%. Admittedly, part of the fast recovery has been due the now smaller labor force but things have been looking up in the Motor City. Here's hoping it continues!

A long way off its peak but the Detroit Metro area has regained almost 170,000 net jobs in about 2 years. That's a pretty fast growth clip if it can be sustained.

I'm guessing most of those are from jobs regained by the Big 3 automakers. For now, they seem to be on the right track, but I'm at least hoping that many more jobs are from a diversified economy. That'll be the key to at least having a stable population.

Agreed, my criticism is the state remains a one trick pony, far too reliant on the auto industry for its fortunes.
