Being in Denver would make it a little warmer than Detroit. I had thought the "feels like" would still have been cooler, but I'm over in Colorado Springs where July is one degree warmer than Detroit, and June and August are the same temperature.
It's interesting to see your take on it. I guess missing the water never really got to me. I know what you mean about the traffic though. I picked the Springs over Denver because I get really fed up with traffic. I'm not sure what the benefit of sprawl is, if you live downtown
. I loved the sprawl for making housing affordable in the suburbs, but Detroit clearly wins at the most affordable housing.
I hope you see a great detroit revival. It was one of the greatest midwestern cities IMO, and I'd love to see it innovate and recover.

Not trying to beat up CO. We like CO in general and probably would like it even more if we moved to Boulder or around there. We really miss the water. The summers are much hotter here (90-100 most of summer) than in MI and we just don't go outside and do much. Guess we are not able to tolerate it like some people do. Downtown denver is cool but the traffic sucks so we don't go often. I think we are realizing we don't want to live in a city just outside a city. No point having tons of traffic and sprawl without being right in the walking portion of a vibrant downtown. You're right lurtsman about the winters...they are great!
Yeah well too bad both of our families are so close we can't be near one without the other being close. So I'd give up being close to mine to be further away from her's lmao Shhhhhhh don't tell them that

I have a friend who moved back to Kalamazoo because the rural county they lived in didn't offer the services they needed. I'd stick to GR, if you aren't interested in moving to the SE. More than likely, you'd end up driving from TC to GR to get the services your child needs. I've heard that kind of story way too many times on some of the "special needs" forums I participate in.
People live in a rural area and the one or two doctors in the area that have these specialties are booked or not really trained to help their kid...

I've been in exactly your situation, so I will tell you what I went through and you can take it for what it's worth.
My husband and I moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 1994. Although we were pretty successful there, we wanted to move back to Michigan to be around family and came back in 2002. We thought family was priceless and that it would be worth the trade off for money, but we didn't realize just how hard it would be back here.
We thought we'd get work when we moved back home and that it would just be slightly lower paying; we didn't predict that my husband and I would both have long periods of unemployment when we were back in Michigan. I have a bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience in my field; a recent job I interviewed for (and didn't get because my Power Point skills weren't advanced enough) only paid $10 an hour. Meanwhile, I had a phone interview today for a job back in Dallas that would start at $50K and the interviewer said that the only reason I don't have a job right now is because I'm in Michigan. He said that my skills would be so much in-demand in Dallas that I'd have employers competing over me. I've been out of work since last March! I'm one of those people who used up their unemployment benefits - I graduated in the top 5 percent of my college class and I can't even get a $10 an hour job.
Yes, there are good things about being here. But the decision was a huge financial disaster and we've never recovered from it. Despite both of us advancing our skills and education since then, my husband and I have still not broken even with what we earned in Dallas in the early 2000s. You can look at all the cost-of-living calculators you want and rationalize to yourself about how it will be so much cheaper in Michigan, but in my experience, it didn't work out that way. Now all these years later we're trying to move back and it's a lot harder now that our kids are older and we have a lot less money.
It's one thing if you have an extremely close-knit family who will be in town and available to babysit your kids and will want to spend time together on a regular basis. Think about how much time you spent with them before you moved away. My family at first was really excited to see us again, but that wore off and now they're not much of a part of our daily lives.
Make sure you're not getting carried away with nostalgia about what it was like to grow up in Michigan, because that was my biggest mistake. I wanted a lot of the same things you mentioned, too. But when it comes to what matters on a daily basis, being able to pay my bills is what matters most. Seeing my family once or twice a month doesn't make up for the fact that my husband is having to drive a 16-year-old car because we can't afford to buy a newer one, you know? Unless your family is paying your bills, you owe it to your kids to make sure you can take care of them - and being able to do so is much less certain in Michigan. The conditions that led you to leave MI in the first place have not changed.
Just remember that phrase "you can't go home again", because in many ways it's true.

Great post wanderer. My wife and I decided not to return to Oregon, where we grew up, for similar reasons. The job market isn't terrible there, but it is pretty bad and the tax rates are horrendous. It's hard not seeing family more often, but for access to a low tax home with a reasonable cost of living and great employment options, it is much easier to buy airfare a couple times per year than to make the move.
Wanderer, I hope you make out to Dallas. It's awful when you're getting denied low level employment despite the skills to work much higher. That's exactly what I was facing when I lived in Iowa. Usually I was getting denied for not being related to the hiring manager. It's amazing how often their second cousin got the position.

We recently relocated back in Michigan after two years living in Charlotte, NC. While we loved the wages, weather, and climate in Charlotte, we had trouble connecting with the people and culture. We also missed the great lakes and really wanted our kids to experience some of the great things about Michigan that we have experienced. I had an opportunity to take a job back here in Michigan and I took it. It's been rough not seeing the sun most days, and this snow.. man this snow is killing me. But, that will pass and the friends and family we have been able to connect with have been great. We also just had an offer on a house accepted. This house would have cost us 150k more in Charlotte than we paid in Michigan and my salary would not have allowed for us to afford it. Time will tell, and I tell myself that when I get to retirement (30+ years away) that I want to move back south again.

I moved to a much better location than my friends and family. Then I campaigned for them to move here. 3 have in the last 18 months. I might get another within the next year.

Keep in mind folks, that I'm not bashing Michigan. I was born in the U.P. and lived in the Detroit area for 24+ years.......
And proud of it. Hiring managers got turned on when I applied for jobs out here in Phoenix; evidently Midwestern types are known to be stable and dedicated when it comes to work. Our reputation precedes us out west.
Periodically, I check the classifieds in SE MI for jobs that I'd be interested in if I lived there. My wife also throws her occasional dart at moving there.....she likes snow.
I always reply "Yeah, but you never lived in it".
All kidding aside, the changing seasons turn me on and I can have fun in any weather.
There's no way in Hades that we could maintain our current lifestyle living in my old neck of the woods. Ain't gonna happen. Also means that retirement would be postponed for quite a while. Something to think about as I approach the big 5-0.
I was homesick a few times during my first year out here......but now I realize that I was just missing the familiarity.

Being near family is important, so do what you must do. It's weird to hear someone say they don't feel right in Colorado, but if you're looking for that really midwestern vibe, it is true that Colorado is more west coast than midwestern.
Michigan has a distinct maritime culture. In addition, there are so many traditions and festivals throughout the state to name which are distinctively Michigan. My ex was from Colorado, and when she lived in Michigan she would make so many remarks about how Michigan feels like a country to itself with the Sweetest Day Holiday, countless coastal towns with a unique atmosphere, festivals, the legends of the shipwrecks in the Great Lakes (Mariner Church), Cider Mills, Ann Arbor, the UP, the Dutch/German/Finnish/Middle Eastern traditions, etc. Michigan does not have a generic bland vibe to it like other places.
Some of America's most breathtaking scenery is in Michigan. Plus, there are countless outdoor activities such as kayaking, boating, fishing, swimming, biking, cross country skiing, ice skating, hockey, tubing, ice fishing, canoeing, visiting the everglades, rock diving, and the list goes on and on. While these activities, traditions, and scenery may not make you move to Michigan even if you were offered twice the salary, trust me, there are plenty who would die to move here with half the salary. So the OP might be missing the Michigan vibe. Maybe this might show a glimpse as to why.

Good post, Republic.....but many of us would have to take about half the salary if we moved back.
