Hello,
My girlfriend and I are heading up to the U.P from Los Angeles and were looking at moving into Marquette. I've looked online for rentals, but really haven't come across too much. Can anyone recommend me a few links? Anyhow, a townhouse, or loft is ideally what we are looking for. Are there a lot of these in the city? I've been to Marquette numerous times, but was never really in "real estate" mode. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks - Zac ps. Oh, and if anyone is curious as to why we'd leave Southern California, the answer is quite simple. Try paying $1400 a month for a studio in West Hollywood for a few years. The answer will become quite apparent. ![]() |

There are quite a few places for rent around Marquette. Check the classifieds of the Mining Journal. There are always alot of listings for houses around the NMU campus and the hospital. Check out the neighborhoods up from Front Street Hill, the Lower Harbor Park, and up toward the Island, Presque Isle. There are some decent neighborhoods within easy access of downtown Marquette-stop in for some Doncker's fudge and some of Jilbert's ice cream sundaes-and check out the beach scene at MaCarty's cove and the "picnic rock" during the 2 months of summer and the waves coming in off Gitchegumee during the November storms. There are also quite a few condos and apartment complexes to choose from. 1400 a month? You could pay 4 or 5 mortgages for that around here, especially in Ishpeming or Negaunee. I pay 200 a month for a 2 bedroom house with a yard and garage in Ishpeming. Now there is, of course, a reason for this. The economy, due to the iron mines declining, does not employ the number of people it did during the boom times and it has become more of a service economy. It takes a certain toughness to live here. It does get cold and true urban life is a long ways away. But people here are very loyal to the UP, are outdoors oriented and live a pace of life that probably would seem slow to you. I've also spent 10 years in Southern California and like Marquette incomparably better. I don't speak for everyone, but I think the UP is a world into itself to some extent. It isn't for everyone-a true urbanite would go crazy here-but it is for me.

Another suggestion: check out the Tourville North offerings in Marquette. They have a website. They're not the cheapest by Marquette standards, but they are close to everything and they are decent. Good luck!

Winter is probably not the best time to find something, I would guess, due to all the NMU people. Been sort of looking myself, as , I may need something if my place sells down south before I get my new home in Marquette completed.......not holding my breath.

We just spent 9 days in Marquette at the Tourville West apartments. These appear to be the nicest smaller apartments in town and with a great location. Most realtors advised to wait for late spring for rental houses. We really enjoyed Marquette, but both Negaunee and Ishpeming seemed lacking the amenities.
