White House to unveil manufacturing institute headquartered in Canton | The Detroit News

Quote:
...

“The long-term goal of the LM3I Institute will be to expand the market for and create new consumers of products and systems that utilize new, lightweight, high performing metals and alloys by removing technological barriers to their manufacture,” the White House said.

Institute will seek to achieve this through leadership in pre-competitive advanced research and partnerships across defense, aerospace, automotive, energy, and consumer products industries. The White House noted that lightweight and modern metals are utilized in a vast array of commercial products, from automobiles, to machinery and equipment, to marine craft and aircraft. "These ultra-light and ultra-strong materials improve the performance, enhance the safety, and boost the energy and fuel efficiency of vehicles and machines," the White House said.

One example that could be made is that, in the future, more automakers will be making their cars completely out of aluminum such as what Ford has done with their F150 pickup trucks. At the same time, the cars themselves won't be astronomically more expensive than the current mostly steel built cars. They'll also be able to be built more quickly and in quantity than without the Institute. However, that's something that can only be proven based on time and investments that will be made.

Nonetheless, this means that Detroit and Michigan will be able to remain a manufacturing hub for the country, not only for the automotive industry, but possibly for other industries that can utilize and need a supply of lightweight and modern metals. The impact likely won't be immediate, but a decade down the line this could indicate a regrowth of Michigan's manufacturing potential and jobs.

As I have said all along, there is no reason for manufacturing to die in this country - the world will always need it. Detroit proper is a "holding pen" for people who initially came for these jobs, and want them to return again - it doesn't have to be cars, but something that presently can't be outsourced. There is also a growing rumbling and unrest inside the slave labor countries about wages and working conditions there.

Labor unrest in China

With more worker unrest abroad and a possible end to government outsourcing incentives, the less desirable outsourcing becomes, and Detroit has the hungry blue-collar workforce.
Seems to me that we, with our local colleges and miscellaneous businesses, could get a piece of that Chicago technological action though. That has always been part of the "grand plan" for southeast Michigan.

I think Detroit - Chicago connections would benefit Detroit more than they would Chicago, but nonetheless I think it could restrengthen the entire Midwest if indeed manufacturing as a whole is revived. The excuse that it's too expensive to build anything domestically might be getting weaker.

lol.

I think I see the problem with Detroit!

I can definitely see 0bama with a hammer and sickle, but with a hammer building something worthy, not so much.

Just what America needs: More consortium think tanks that accomplish ZERO.

I don't understand why government has to get involved in building manufacturing plants (or anything else) when ordinary people and civilians can actually do it themselves.

The private sector can only do so much while still making a profit.

They're not building plants specifically, they're just accelerating R&D investment so that new technology would come quicker than if the private sector were to do it on it's own.

Interesting.

Research Triangle Park, which I'm sure most people are familiar with, was almost completely started by government and pharma research. It now includes a lot more than that, but that's how it got started: government investment. $140 Million is no small potatoes.

So why do you guys think Obama is so interested in Detroit and automotive lately? He made multiple references to the area in his SOTU this year, and now this? Is it an attempt to take a jab at the Southern Republicans who left Detroit out to dry? Gave big fat tax credits to foreign automakers? Setting up a narrative for the next presidential race or congressional races that: Democrats are the real Americans, Republicans support foreign companies?

The mind wonders (wanders).
