We are looking for suggestions about where to live between Fenton and Detroit MI. I am moving to work in Fenton, MI with my 2 kids of 5 and 7. My family likes big city and rapid life style, and would like to be closer but not necessarily in areas like downtown NY. We love scenaries, and commuter traffic is also a factor.

Low crime rates and a better, safe neighborhood is important. I am a physician and come and go at odd hours. I am not a camping, fishing person but would like to be near lakes for the scenary if possible. We are drawing a blank at this point and any suggestion would be appreciated.

I will be there for 4 - 5 years and be back to my life in California to the nice weather. Also, any idea that is hit less by the snow if any? If not, the other factors are more important. Planning to rent for atleast a year.

Big city "action" will only be in Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Royal Oak/Ferndale - the rest is pretty sleepy.
Outdoor recreation is in a ring of parks around the metro Detroit area.
Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions

You might consider Milford. All those towns are pretty sedate.
For recreational family outings I always recommend Kensington Metropark and I think your family would definitely enjoy it. Fun to explore, and youtube has plenty of videos.

The only real difference in snowfall is between west Michigan and east Michigan.

Fenton is a very nice little city with good schools - since you'll be working there, why not live there? Lots of lakes and hiking opportunities (Seven Lakes, Holly). And there's the old "sleepy" part of Fenton (aka Dibbleville) and the newer big-box store, lake community, big-ass-houses Fenton (aka mostly west of Owen Rd off of US-23.)

Not a ton of nightlife or cultural amenities, true, but there is still plenty to do in Northern Oakland/southern Genesee counties if you don't mind driving 30 minutes or so for a night out or weekend attractions or museums or shows. Even Flint has those. Honestly you can stay busy in the area every weekend if you're open to new experiences and not expecting NYC-type energy. There is a lot going on in the region year-around.

Otherwise, as Detwah says - A2, Royal Oak, Ferndale or parts of Detroit city. But you'll be stuck with a possibly onerous commute with those options, so it depends also on how important commute time is for you.

SE Michigan is pretty equal-opportunity in regards to snow. It's Michigan, it gets cold, and it snows. The west side of the state gets a lot more snow (lake effect); the eastern part gets less snow and often colder temperatures.

I agree with just living in Fenton until you get back to Sunny California. It's a nice town.
