The winter of 95 we had 40 below 0 for a month. The mains froze 11 feet down in Cheboygan county. There was no snow and extreme cold.
Weather in winter is not "fun" and you do not go out and play in it when it is this extreme. I have to say that I have also seen weather in winter very warm for Michigan, that means 20 above in feb.
If you like cold and snow and all the trouble that goes with it fine. But you don't hear of many people retiring to the cold weather do you. There is a reason that Fla. has many millions more people than many cold weather states. Michigan has the population it has because of industry only, not because of the "weather" or any other such claptrap.
I'll raise the BS flag for this one. You are talking the Pigeon River forest here. I lived outside of Gaylord and can assure you that we did NOT have a month below -40 temps in ANY year. 1995 was a cold one, but not that cold. My house was on the edge of the Pigeon River forest and while we had days below zero in the mornings, there was VERY few that it didn't raise above 0 for at least part of the day (I was working outside for Sylvan Resort so keeping an eye on temps was a constant thing, every day all day). 20 above in Feb is very warm? That is the average temp for the area. I have seen it in the 50's in Feb before (not very often, but it has been there.) Try to stir your pot of poo somewhere else, I know better for that area, during that time frame.

Hey! Didn't I see you in that new Pixar film "Wall-E"? You were that guy who fell out of his chair and had been so saturated by physical comfort that he had lost all ability to support himself, so he had to have robots help him up. Bravo on your brilliant performance!

Man - last night I stood alone on the beach in Grand Marais. 4-5 foot waves were crashing at my feet, 5 shooting stars pierced the clear sky, a UFO followed my flashlight up and down and all around, and the Northern Lights pierced the night sky like an Emerald City. Behind me was a funky little music fest that went late into the night. You should have seen the sunset too - holy wha!

You can keep Florida. Old people move South because they're old and brittle. I still have quite a bit of living to do.

Default Snow is Grand

I love snow. I love Michigan in the winter. Snow is so CLEAN! No bugs! No sweating! I love it when the snow is in shadow and looks blue. Winter is coming! YEAHHHHH! (Say hi to humid, sweaty, buggy GA for me when you get there.) Oh, and one more thing...I retired to Michigan.

Actually, I believe it was January 1994 that was colder than average in many areas of the Upper Midwest and Interior Northeast.

You are right. I lived in Marfa for three years and loved the climate there!
Houston is just too humid. My husband has promised me that we will get out of here within the next 2 years; I am holding him to that!

I live in Florida and plan to retire in Michigan (left 26 years ago due to the economy - not the weather). Everyone is different. Some like the heat (or cold) and some don't. Me? I'll take the change of seasons. Trying to do outdoor activities in 90 degree weather gets old quick (unless you like the heat of course ).

Marfa is pretty nice -- probably too small a town for a lot of people. That whole area around Big Bend seems like it'd be nice enough to live in. I live near the only mountains in Texas but mountains are addicting.
