Hello, my fiancee and I will be soon relocating and are seeking some advice. We are in our mid/upper 20s and currently live in Royal Oak. We like it here and don't want to move but she just got a job in Brighton so the commute is a bit long. Plus, I work in White Lake and the commute is a bit long for me.

We are both more city types and unfortunately it seems like there are not a whole lot of options between Brighton and White Lake, but from what we've seen so far Milford sounds like a great place (and conveniently located to both of our jobs). Only problem is, there seems to be no vacancy in Milford in our price range (rentals at < $1100/mo). So, we've expanded our search to include Brighton and Howell. In a nutshell we are looking for a place that's walkable, has a nice downtown, and a good sense of community. We are not looking for soulless, sprawling, suburban no-place hell. We aren't planning on having kids anytime soon so schools are not an issue.

I'd be interested in peoples' opinions of these towns, especially people who live or lived there. Are they walkable, do they have nice downtowns, do they have a sense of community? Am I overlooking other towns in the area that might fit this bill? Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am aware of the Howell racism talk and I'm not interested in posts on that subject, unless you've personally had experience with discrimination.

Might want to check out Novi or Fenton as well. Brighton seems to be a sprawl, traffic in/around the area of 23/96 convergence always seems to be congested and the walls of malls and shopping centers remind me of the suburban sprawl you are trying to avoid. That being said, you might want to avoid having to travel through that area on your way to work in White Lake.

They are going to completely replace the I 96 / US 23 interchange this summer. It will be a boggle for sometime this summer, but once it is done it's going to be so much easier to get around.

We are in Brighton (mid-way to Howell off Grand River) and find the commute into the metro are relatively smooth. Depending on time of day. I commute to the DMC 5 days a week, traveling from Brighton around 5:50 A.M. and arriving DMC around 6:30. I leave DMC at 3:30 P.M. and usually get into Brighton by 4:10 85% of the time.

Milford is great, but driving from the town area way back to 96 is exhausting during commuting times.

Howell? If you have been watching the news and the stories of the basketball game with Grand Blanc...

There is also the New Hudson area just south of 96 along Grand River that could be a nice commute.
