This is coolio.

EMMET COUNTY, MI – Michigan’s only Dark Sky Park will get a $7 million upgrade this year. Emmet County leaders have approved a bond to fund an indoor observatory with restrooms and meeting space at the park near Mackinaw City.

Construction at The Headlands International Dark Sky Park could start later this year and be finished in 2015.

That is very cool.

Who's going to keep the dome cleared of snow during the winter?

I'll volunteer. I need to get a longer roof rake though.

Hopefully, this will set an example for the rest of the state. We should require that all new outdoor lighting be shielded downwards, and there should be a plan to retrofit existing light fixtures--and to reduce the amount of outdoor lighting, too! Far too many communities mindlessly place harsh, bright lights along roadways and walkways. Canton Township, in southeast Michigan, is literally a glaring example of what not to do. Their lighting actually impedes visibility of the road and needlessly adds to light pollution. Even touristy Tawas City and East Tawas placed ugly, exposed lighting along Tawas Bay. What on earth were they thinking??

It's a shame that city kids don't get to see a night sky filled with stars. It's no wonder that they have no sense of wonder.

We live just down the road a bit from The Headlands. Very nice spot, though we have zero light pollution were we live anyway.
The Headlands is one of only 16 Dark Sky parks in the world.
As long as the new place is built right, there should be no worries about snow on the roof.
Also, this new building will replace the existing one that is in place now, it was built before the area was designated as a Dark Sky Park.
