Specifically, around the Houghton area?

We're considering a move and are wondering if life would be MUCH easier if we had a 4 wheel drive. FWIW, I'm from the lake effect snowbelt in NW Indiana so am very used to driving in snow/ice (probably not UP amounts, though!)

thanks!

No, not necessary, although AWD would be a better choice in terms of fuel economy. 4WD is a better option if you live way back in the woods and deal with severely degraded roads. A good set of snow tires can make the most difference in handling, traction, through deep snow. I drive Subaru for many years in the snowbelt and that is what I prefer.

I personally would not live across the bridge without a 4 X 4. Unless you have no plans to drive year round. I live northwest of Detroit and would not be without a four wheeler.

If you are going to be living in town, you really don't need it. The towns in the Upper Peninsula are very diligent about getting the roads plowed in the winter. Plenty of people drive regular sedans around here.
If you are going to be living in a rural area, it would help, but you could probably survive without it.

That would probably depend on how far you drive to work and whether you live in town versus rural.

Well said! For winters in the UP you only need to understand 4 letters; S U B A R U

Nah...you don't need a 4-wheel drive. All you need is a good snowmobile.

I survived MTU with a Honda Civic that didn't have power steering. I wish I had AWD on certain days, but it worked out for the most part.

FWD with winter tires > AWD with all seasons or all terrain tires
RWD with winter tires > AWD with all seasons too. That's how Scandinavians lived for decades (almost all Volvos were RWD until the 90s)
