Have you ever been to central park? Its almost the size of the city of Jackson.

I agree. You say you are a young couple so I will strongly advise you to stay as far away from Hudson as you can. It's a small town about 1700 people and everyone will know everything you do and when you do it. And most people seem to be related in one way or another. The cops will bother you because your new. I had been pulled over 3 times in 20 years of driving and had 2 speeding tickets 10 years apart and in my short 2 years there was pulled over 6 times for bs stuff and never given a ticket. There is nothing to do and they have one grocery store with high prices so you have to drive 20 miles to Adrian to shop. If he's going to be working in Addison and your going to work find a job in Jackson or Adrian and live in between or have one person commute. I've lived in all 3 towns as a young person and if I had to do it today I would pick Jackson hands down.

don't do it if you can avoid it. i had to move to jackson to take a job in napoleon for 2 years, which is very close to addison and i hated it. it's impossible to make friends and there are no young people there to speak of.
however, if you do decide to move to jackson, you could make it work. to many people in addison and in that general area, jackson has everything you could need. however, if you're a city girl like me, it's not for you.

LOL I'm glad you posted. I don't think she is reading anymore. I lived in that area 27 years ago and had to go back 3 years ago for business for a few years. I'm in Tampa and everytime I drive by a northbound I-75 sign I get flashbacks.

Exactly why did you hate it? I'm not sure if that was just tongue-in-cheek comment.
It's one of the places I'm looking at. It looks like there's a nice lake right nearby. I'm not a city girl, but like the country, lakes, outdoors, gardening, etc. It looked like Addison, Cement City, Hudson, Onsted, and Brooklyn all have country areas with lakes nearby. I'm only looking on the map at this point so I have no idea what it looks like in person. But I've heard the Irish Hills are nice, etc.

You GO KatieMich!!! There are so many Jackson haters on this forum, it's revolting. I'm a native of Jackson, Michigan. I've been alot of places and I still marvel at the personality that Jackson has...yes, LOTS of lakes (compared to Lansing...which has ONE) and still has the classic businesses that made it great. OK,OK, so Jackson has some flaws...what city doesn't? But look at the strides it has made since the 1980s...look at what they have done to downtown...compare it to Battle Creek, then start complaining. God, these whiners that hate Jackson...move if you hate it so much.

Hey, I'm one of the people who used to "whine" about Jackson(and the worst years of my life living there)...and guess what I moved! Along with everyone else that still has some sense, (and doesn't want to loose 10% of their equity in their home every year). There are a great deal of Jackson haters for many reasons, and since the 1980's the unemployment rate has risen 70%! I wouldn't consider the problem that Jackson has as "flaws", but rather a chronic disease that is the leadership of that city...it will never be a place to live.

What you are talking about here is EVERYTOWN, USA at this moment in time. It still doesn't make Jackson the horror story you present it to be. Sorry if you had a bad time there...you don't live there anymore correct?, so why are you still complaining? Do you think that will help anything? Or anyone? I don't think so.

Mitten, I apologize if I sounded mean. I'm not really, I guess I just get defensive when it comes to Jackson...so many of my friends hated it here, and I admit..I got on that bandwagon for awhile when I was in HS...but I grew to love it, and I still do. I go there to visit my sis and buy some delicious coffee at a new coffee brewing place downtown.
I understand that some places you live are bad memories. I'm sorry if that happened to you.

Where are you relocating from? My advice is don't waste your youth in these boring small Michigan towns forever, unless you really have a fear of crime or something of that nature. Jackson, Brooklyn, Addison, all the same really. Life goes on, you live a nice square life, go to work, come home, maybe go out to eat, etc... I think that is why younger people leave Michigan, they aren't ready to settle down yet into that pattern better fit for someone in their 50's. HOpe you don't find that offensive if that is what you want out of life, if it is be my guest, you are probably safer then folks out traveling or doing other things.

Its more anger regarding the continued job loss, houses crumbling, abandon buildings, but the most angering is the leadership there. You are right the land around Jackson is tops for recreation and wildlife sighting, but its almost impossible to make a living there...enjoy the quite life but your forced into poverty. The Mayor, DDA, and the Enterprise group have practically argued amongst each other regarding what to do for the city...ask any business owner downtown, they will explain their frustrations. Its always the same story there: "What will help downtown?" But, businesses continue to close their doors, its just a sad state of affairs, thats where I get my anger from.
