I seriously doubt that there are more engineering jobs in Detroit vs Seattle...

Detroit is no where to be found. I dont think you can have a serious conversation if you think Detroit is better than Seattle for tech and tech jobs......................

Yes those are nice numbers for "high tech" jobs - which could be just about anything. When I said Tech Center I was referring to that big complex that has 16,000 engineers and designers. If your a mechanical or industrial engineer Southeast Michigan is still one of the best markets to work. I am pretty sure that the Japanese, Germans and Koreans do not have large tech/engineering facilities located here just on a whim.

Hey hey now, let's remember our priorities:
1. Live in a yuppiefied area
2. Everything else (including your career).

The GM Tech center in Warren is world class. Always has been. If OP is being recruited from Seattle to work there, I am guessing that he (she) is heading for a great career.

Yeah Seattle is cool, but go back and take vacations if that is so important. Making a good living comes first in my opinion.

Oh and Royal Oak, Berkley and Ferndale are all excellent places to be OP. Birmingham is the best if you are really making good money.

Whatever became of the land south of the Tech Center that GM sold for residential development?

South? Don't you mean west? South of the GM Tech Center is a tank manufacturing/army base. West of the GM Tech Center, there was new residential development, but it's incomplete because of the housing crash of '08-'09.

Yeah that's right, it was west of the Tech center across Mound Rd between 12 and 13. Got my directions crossed up there. I remember when I was living in Warren it was the only undeveloped section left in the city. So the crash stopped it huh? I remember they had some big plans for condos and houses.

Yea only couple dozen of maybe 100 or so houses got built (specifically the lots right off 12 Mile). A lot of them were being sold around $300K when they first started selling. Then of course a lot got foreclosed and sold at half the price a few years later. However, lately the market has been heating back up and some are being sold for $230K-$250K. I haven't been back through lately to see if they've resumed construction, but a lot of other brand new subdivisions around town have started rebuilding again. Definitely a lot slower than pre-crash though.
