Hello,

I am from the west coast moving to Michigan for a job. These are the places offered:

Detroit
Gaylord
East Jordan
Harbor Springs/Petoskey
Alpena

I'm mainly looking for:
Area within 30min or shorter commutable driving distance
Safety/Low crime rate
Good hiking/nature
Shopping is not a huge factor for me

Also any pros/cons to living in Michigan? Thanks in advance.

Wow, huge differences there.

If you are OK with small towns Petoskey is a winner with lots of Lake Michigan shore access, it's kind of an upscale vacation community. Detroit is Detroit, but it's burbs can be quite nice. If you like to hunt turkey and deer or have a fetish for faux Swiss architecture, consider Gaylord. Never been to the other two.

its not on your list but if your move availability is open you should check out the greater grand rapids area.

Hiking and nature with the shopping basics - that would be northern lower Michigan. Lake Michigan side would be my choice for a good mix. There are hiking trails all over the state.
Alpena: on Lake Huron with Negwegon State Park nearby.
Gaylord: inland and in the midst of nature - big with hunting.
Harbor Springs & Petoskey: on the lake and touristy. a bit north is Wilderness State Park, and further south is the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

Some resources.

Every location except Detroit has a short, or non-existent commute time. Detroit would have less snow. If you want nature and outdoor activities, but still have a resemblance of civilization, I would head for Alpena.
