the offered job is working at the old AFB working on jets. He went to school for this and has had a hard time finding a job since everyone wants experinced people. Anyone out there that works there?
This job is actually offered by STS which I believe is a temp agency. Which is annother reason I have my doubts.
Right now he is driving truck since he can't find a job in the aviation dept.
Any help would be appreciated also any homes known (if we do move) with acerage would be nice.

My hubby works exactly where your hubby has been offered a job... and is hoping to run as soon as we can sell our house and find something different. Beware of any offer made from this company... he did contract for the first year (they told him it would be about 6 months and then he'd be hired in... he had to beg and plead for 6 months to get hired on and still didn't get the raise they promised him, meantime, our family of 4 had no health insurance , vacation time or paid holidays)... they will promise you the moon and then milk you dry until you are so frustrated that you cut and run, or so stuck that you just have to grin and bear it! I have to be careful, because I am thankful he has the job in this lousy economy but now I am stuck in an area where I can't use my degree (I'm working in fast food... ugh) and the kids are in schools that I am not happy with. Do LOTS of research before you come! I'd say if you don't have kids, don't care about anything except hunting, fishing or drinking, and don't want a career for yourself... you could probably do ok. Otherwise... check out GE in NC, Fed Ex, Pratt and Whitney in CT, or Boeing in Seattle. Even a smaller company somewhere else is better than the lone giant up here... Good Luck! Drop me a line if you want more details.....
PS... if you do accept the job... rent until you are sure you want to stay... there are tons of houses on the market here and unless you buy something very retiree-friendly, it can take upwards of 2-4 years to sell a place...

There aren't as many snakes as there are in your part of the country.

I moved from MI to NC last year because of my work but my husband has been unsuccessful in finding work here after months of trying. If you are still looking for that home with acreage and a barn, I have home (completely updated), new outbuilding and 10 acres for sale in the Capac/Imlay City area.

Oscoda is nice
I actually just started working at Kalitta Air. I am quite familiar with them, though this is the first time I have worked for them. I worked at different places around the Willow Run airport (YIP) in Ypsilanti, MI for nearly 20 years. STS is the largest aircraft mechanic contracting agency in the world. They also have a rep for not telling the truth, like many corporations, actually. I have worked here for almost 3 weeks now, (in structures) and actually may want to work here permanently. I am a very (did I mention very?) particular person, and see a great amount of potential with this airline. As a new mechanic, your DH (debonair husband?) would be welcomed here, but does have some challenges. There are leaders here that are good at mentoring a new guy (FNG). There are also leaders here that aren't good. at anything. even leading. Kind of like any place that anyone works. The cost of living here is minimal, compared to S.E. Mich, where my home and family are. We are considering moving up here due to that very fact. The thing to consider (among others, naturally) is the difference in pay vs. cost of living. They are relative factors, not absolutes. I agree with the other posters about the state of the economy in Michigan, and the worst is yet to come in the form of increased taxation at the state level. I am in an industry that will ALWAYS be around. People will never stop flying stuff, and they need functional aircraft in order to do it. Keep us updated on what happens.
Oh, re: Oscoda itself: I like the outdoors, and we have plenty. It's a small town, and I like small towns. Lake Huron is right out my door (how cool is that?) (quite cold, actually )
