Teaching jobs in Oakland County
My husband is a medical student and is considering doing his residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. I am a Social Studies teacher and was wondering how hard it would be to find a teaching job. I have heard that teaching jobs are hard to get and that people are moving out of Michigan to teach? Is this true? I am willing to teach anywhere within an hour's drive. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am not a teacher nor do I live in Pontiac, but I have a friend who has been looking for a teaching job for the last year; he's looked EVERYWHERE in Michigan. He's giving it one more year and than moving out of state. He says there are slim picking to begin with, so competition is tough! There are hundreds of applicants for every teaching job! I would check out school systems that are ever expanding; like Utica Community Schools or Chippwea Valley Schools (Macomb County area)
Good Luck!

Check out the Huron Valley School District in the Milford, MI area. I don't know what their current hiring status is - but it's a GREAT area to live and the school district is top rated in Michigan.
Just a FYI - hope it helps - good luck!

Unfortunately, it is true that people are moving out of Michigan to find teaching jobs...I'm one of them. I just graduated with my teaching degree in social studies in April and haven't been able to find anything. There are a number of great teaching colleges in the state, which leaves it flooded with applicants for very few jobs. Even more unfortunate is that Oakland and Macomb county (or anything in Southeast Michigan) is the most overrun with out of work teachers. Jobs do become available, it is just extremely competitive.
If you do end up moving here, the whole of Oakland County does their hiring through one application site, which is nice. Here's the link : http://www.oakland.k12.mi.us/careers/submit_resume.html
Good luck!

My daughter graduated with her teaching degree 2 years ago and is working in a credit union right now. She is going back to school to expand on her degree so she can find work. She had more than enough subteaching jobs, but was getting married in October and felt that she could not take off onpaid summers. So.........I guess that Christian Schools are still hiring if you are qualified for that. Look online to see what the situation is, many are relocating out of state if they can handle moving away from family. There are jobs out there in other areas, but you will have to have a very eye catching resume to get in to be interviewed. Michigan is hurting right now and I don't envy anyone moving there. Regards.
