I've lived in Michigan all my life except for brief stays in Virginia and California. I love it here except for the snow. East Lansing has all the advantages. A university, small city feel, bigger city nearby. Great parks, a super dogpark on east side of Lansing, pleasant neighborhoods. Yes, there are economic problems, but if you have a job or can find one quickly, you'll be okay.

Default Michigan is a great place to live.

I can't imagine anything better. You anti-government folks might want to try Clour de Alene. It sounds more like your style.

Coming from a 20 year old, as of this point.. Michigan is not the place for me to live.. I'm moving out of here (Grand Rapids). I'm tired of Michigan, the weather, and just how nothing really happens. Its a pretty uneventful town living in walker. I'll move out of state for a few years but chances are once I get older and decide to raise a family I'll probably end up moving back here. It really is a fine place to raise children in a pretty nice atmosphere. Granted the jobs aren't great right now.. but we're transforming, the medical field is raising and Grand Rapids will soon be leading in the nation. I'll never move to Detroit unless 3/4 of its inhabitants are shipped to the moon though.

Please read some of th posts in the Times Herald:
Times Herald - www.thetimesherald.com - Port Huron, MI
Port Huron has now voted all of the "good 'ol boys" out and is being run by a very fresh minded city council.
The downtown area still hurting a bit, but no place can touch the water this city has to offer in the summer time. You can find the most beautiful Carribean bay somewhere, and you'll still have to wash off the salt after you get out. Not so in Lake Huron. Come here, buy a boat and take it out on the lake on a sunny 80 degree day in July, August and September, travel 10 minutes out in the lake and you'll find yourself all alone with no one within miles - jump in and enjoy one of the most refreshing swims you'll ever find (just make sure you're a good swimmer - remember, no one is around to save you either).

odinloki,
Port Huron is still a very beautiful area and we miss you very much (and anyone else that has left) - come on back (If you can find a job ).

I travel for work as a consultant (in SC today) and have seen much of the US. Every place has it's problems, but not many can match the positives found here and in other Michigan towns and rural areas. I have the choice to live anywhere I want east of the Rockies - I live in Michigan and would not consider moving away.

I couldn't disagree more.
I hate Michigan. I've always hated it.
The weather is unpredictable (you are either sweating or freezing with the exception of a few days out of the year), there's nothing to do, it's far away from everything...
I can't understand why anyone would want to move here, and even more, I can't understand why anyone would want to stay here.

Far from everything? What is everything? Southern Michigan, and the Great Lakes area, is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. Only the Northeast is more densely populated. The third largest city in the country (Chicago) is only a mere hours away. Southeast Michigan is home to over 4 Million people.

But why anyone would live and stay somewhere they hate is beyond me.

And Chicago sucks.

I never said that it didn't have people. I said that I didn't understand the people.

You have to drive about 7 or more hours to get to mountains, and 12 to get to the ocean. From the South East side of Michigan it's:

12 hours to New York City
5 hours to Pittsburgh
10 hours to Philly
15 hours to Boston
20 or so hours to Washington D.C.
2-3 days to California

And the reason why I'm here is because my parents moved me from New York/New Jersey, my mother guilted me into going to college here, and now the economy is so horrible that I can't get enough money to move, and I'm basically being forced into completing my M.A. here. Believe me...if my circumstances would have been more in my favor, I would have moved a LONG time ago.

You're being forced into completing your M.A.? That doesn't even make sense. How much does that cost compared to a Greyhound ticket?

As far as the cities you listed, I personally wouldn't want to live within an hour of any of them. Too expensive.

Ok, then, you tell me how to become a psychologist without going to graduate school.
