Default Melvindale area?

I grew up in sterling heights and now live in the new haven area. My DH works in Melvindale and says housing is really cheap. Although I've been there a few times, I really don't know much about the area. Is it a nice area? How are the school? Nice people? I am just curious. We are currently looking for a house and those seem to be in our price range. I am guarded though, we have 3 small children, so school quality and environment are very important.

Other places we are looking are:
St. Clair Shores
certain parts of Roseville
Fraser
Clinton Township

Actually any input you have would be appreciated! We are first time home buyers and want to get the most for our money!

Hi Jen,

I am quite familiar with Melvindale! I honestly don't know where to start so i'll type away. If you have any specific questions, feel free. Remeber, i am not a realtor, just used to live there. Very, very familiar with the area.

The downriver area in general is blue-collar. The infrastructure to most cities down that way are old or are in need of serious repair hence higher taxes.

Downriver is known for its higher taxes to lesser services ratio. You'd think you'd get more bang for your buck so to speak but believe me, there is a reason!

Some cities are trying to consolidate police force, firefighters and other services. They are seeking solutions due to being cash strapped.

I've been to Melvindale schools and so has my wife, bear in mind we've been to alot of other schools too, in-state and out of state and we both agree Melvindale schools sucked. Maybe times have changed but i doubt it.

Some parts of the city you have to deal with the "rotten egg" smell when you get a good wind blowing south due to the countless factories bordering it. Marathon, Ford-Rouge Complex, the old Ford Steel/Smelting Plant and many more.

One thing i know about downriver schools now is if you'd want your child/children to go to a different school in a different city, you'd can enroll them. For instance, you live in Melvindale and like the Trenton schools better so you have options as to deciding what school you'd like your kids to go to.

I probably have a million things to say but hope this helps.

There is a reason why it is called MELVINHOLE.
