4.2 million people live in this metropolitan area. They do not all drive an AWD.

Doesn't matter

Second question, is it preferable to have heavy cars like Accords or is compact cars like Civic fine?
Doesn't matter.
However, a depends on the trim, a Civic is only 100 lbs lighter than an Accord.

What does matter are tires.

Don't drive on bald tires
Don't drive on performance tires
Don't commute in the winter on summer tires

If you want to fit in, buy an explorer.
If you want to fit in, but not buy a tall wagon, buy a Focus, Fiesta, or Fusion. Or an Impala if you want a larger car.

You'll see more J-Bodies than you've ever seen in your entire life. They basically aren't seen outside Michigan, but get ready to see Cobalts and Cavilers all day, every day.

Hey cyano84, Troy is a nice area that has had a lot of growth. I lived there and around that area, (Oakland Cty) previously for a lot of years . I'm partial to an SUV in the snow and have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd. I hit a slick patch on the highway further N in November and the Jeep I had then I think saved mine and my friends life when the car flipped onto its roof. Just be cautious in the snow and ice and don't let anyone intimidate you into going faster than you're comfortable driving since especially since you're not comfortable driving in inclement weather. As someone said previously, you would probably do fine with the car you have now. Good luck in your future and take care!
