Help - What's wrong with Cheboygan ??? (Petoskey: real estate, hotels, work)

I agree with one who said it is a great place to visit but not a good place to live. I grew up there since day one, and once I graduated High School in 2006 I joined the Marine Corps. There are no jobs in Michigan and not the place to start for a future. I now live in Southern California and love it, but there is a lot I miss about Cheboygan.

-Everyone is friendly and you know a lot of people
-Going to This Old House for lunch everyday in HS
-Sports
-Mackinaw Crossings
-Mackinac Island
-Parties in the woods
-The beautiful scenery
-And so on

In Cheboygan you are right on the Great Lakes, and you get the best of all seasons. Spring and Autumn are absolutely beautiful. Summer is a crazy time there because there are a lot of tourists that come up to Mackinaw, and a lot of people have summer cottages on Mullet Lake. (I hope to have one, one day.) Winter, there are so many ski resorts all over you are always close to one. Nothing beats snowboarding in Northern Michigan.

Living in So. Cal I wonder how I will ever go back to Cheboygan, or Michigan in general.
Being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan at this time, makes me want to be there more than ever. Seeing the lifestyles out here, you realize how good you had it back home.
And that's exactly what Cheboygan is...nothing but HOME.

Indian River is EXTREMELY small and nothing is there. Good thing though is you are in betweem Cheboygan and Petoskey. I never made any use of Indian River and I have lived in Cheboygan for 19 years before I moved to Southern Cali. Harbor Springs though is a beautiful place to live. More classy than the other towns in Northern Michigan.

You folks do realize that in cases of "consenting" teenagers where the girl is under age, the young man is guilty of statutory rape and is technically considered a pedophile. It is not necessarily date rape, either. In many cases, they are what we used to call high school sweethearts and are hoping/planning to be married. The registry was busy today so I could not get on to check if this was the case in Cheyboygan, but I suspect it may be.

Just my two cents, kinda echoing others...

My wife grew up in Mackinaw City and her family still lives there, so we visit Northern Michigan quite a bit.

Simply because of the distance from a large city, there's a sense of peacefulness that can descend on you during the fall/winter/spring months, and a sense of otherworldliness that descends on your during the tourist months.

Of course, one's peacefulness is another's boredom, and one's tourist season is another's recipe for a great Jaywalking.

For me, growing up in a large metro area, it's difficult to personally find living up there appealing. It seems isolated, away from the world...a shopping trip takes an entire day, while a quick trip to anything resembling a supermarket can take upwards of three hours, depending on your drive.

On the other hand, many of the people seem nice, especially if you've been around awhile.

I've never found Cheboygan that attractive, although Mackinaw City and Petoskey have their charms.

I always thought Cheyboygan was a cute little town. True there isn't much there, but I don't agree with whomever said there weren't any good restaurants. The Boathouse is really nice. Course I've always liked Yecks and The Carnation too. As far as the economy goes there isn't really much there. I think a lot of the people there have been there their whole lives. A lot of older people and retirees.

The schools must be really bad, Angel008a edited her post for spelling but I still counted numerous grammatical errors. Course that's just the english teacher in me coming out. lol

You all know I have a lot of positive things to say about Cheboygan. So, I will focus on the schools since people keep saying how bad they are!

What standards are you looking at? I think Cheboygan Public and Private schools are great! If you are comparing them to districts with a lot more money, then sure you will not find as many opportunities. Many, many high school students have gone on to graduate from an undergraduate school along with graduate school!!! My dad is organizing his 40year class reunion this weekend, and lets say that there is a lot of comradery in most classes!

Please be more specific if you all think the schools are so horrible. I will do my best to give you more information about the schools when you give me more information about why they are "so bad"!

there are many different types of jobs in Cheboygan as well. The hospital is great so if you are in any kind of medical field you would have that option as well as independent medical practices.
The county courthouse is there and employs many-including my mom
There are accountants, insurance agencies, lawyers, schools (of course we know though that most schools throughout michigan don't hire very often!), the DNR, Construction companies, and many many many more unique and common ventures-if you want to work at a factory then yes there is only one.

Like I said, I like Cheboygan. My mom grew up there and we visit every year. I don't really know much about the schools there, good or bad. I was just picking on a previous post because poor spelling and grammar are a pet peeve of mine and they said they were a Cheboygan graduate.

P.S. You forgot to mention the newspaper. (Writer's, editors, and the like.....)

I looked back at the post you are referencing and I see now what you are talking about!

I know Cheboygan and other small towns like it are not for everyone, but it really does have a lot to offer-you have to be willing to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities!

Each year the Chamber puts out a "magazine" about cheboygan and if you actually go to the website Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce you can download a pdf version of it and in this years edition it specifically talks about young families returning to or making cheboygan their home for the first time. Too bad they don't still have last year's edition to download, but this one is not bad either

Makes me happy to know you actually have first-hand experience visiting my hometown and you actually seem to enjoy it!!

also, for those who have not been there in a really long time, they are putting forth a great effort to improve the downtown and making everything about the city more attractive to tourists and locals alike
