when everyone around you is being negative then the easy thing to do is be negative with them, make an effort and try to find the positive things, the good things in life....it will make everyone's outlook that much better
only three weeks and i'll be in in cheboygan/mackinaw for a wedding....and five weeks til i'll be in cheboygan for two weeks....i can't wait!!!!

The problem is, there is nothing positive about northern Michigan. I have found many positives with the Detroit area, hence why I live there now.

Cheboygan

If you want to drive from petoskey you are talking about quite a hop. In the winter it would be a bad drive, Going through pelston and taking riggsville road, or robinson, It is thirty miles to cheb. from petoskey. Cheboygan last I looked was had the lowest income of any county not sure if it still does. The comment about petoskey having a small hospital is not correct at all, it is a regional hospital and is very large. This hospital is several storys tall and takes up the better part of five city blocks.
They do heart tras. and have a burn center.
If not for the hospital the town now with the housing economy in the dumper would be really dead.
The comment that harbor springs is a wealthy town is true, I have worked there for years and for people like ford, rynolds in RJR Rynolds,Bissel, and others with moldy money. It is said that 10 percent of the nations wealth has a home on the point. But Harbor springs real estate has tanked for the last two years. The people with money do not buy homes out side of the places like the point or gelnn drive. places where you start in the million dollar mark.
Where the wife summers in a 10000 SF home with the mercadies that is parked there just for summer use.
I would not move to Indian River, it is a very small town has almost no places to eat, and one food store, Kens village market, appx, thirty percent higher on avg. the nearest Wmart is Cheboygan about twentyfive miles north.
Indian river as said is a resort town and never grew past it. There is nothing to do there and I mean nothing.
If you want to move up north focus on Petoskey, not a whole lot to do there but a heck of a nicer town than cheboygan and even though the old vics that once brought over 200000 are now in the 175000 range they will go up when things turn around, in 5 to 7 years. The town is much more beautiful than cheboygan will ever be. The down town of cheboygan is run down with half the stores closed down or in disrepair. The Prosicuter there is more concerned about animal cruelty than about crime, she prosicuted a man in our neighborhood for killing a dog that was born with out any legs or eyes, said he should have taken it to the pound and had it looked at before making a life and death desision. The man did not have a lot of money so had to take a plea of cruelty to an animal. Catherine M. Castagne, I know of several Attorneys in the area and they all roll their eyes when you talk about her. I think she is up for election this year. Hope they vote her out. The short answer is there are many towns in the nort of michigan that are far far better than cheboygan.

And you must be a city boy!!! As far as Cheboygan goes...its a wonderful town!! If you dont have to count on other people to keep you occupied!! Yes it is a small town but the people are very nice and willing to help you when one is in any kind of trouble, can you say that about your town? As far as eateries..there are plenty of places to go to dinner and they do serve very good and healthy food, mostly home grown as far as a good steak WE RAISE THEM OURSELF! Can you say whats in your meat?
This is what this world has come to,if it isnt conveient then its not good right? Wrong! Most people now days wouldnt even be able to survive living off the land because they dont know how!! If there isnt a store right down the road to get there groceries or anything for that matter then there lost!! I pity people like you that is very narrow minded.

Small town feel is great!
Okay, I have taken the time to read every post posted in this section so far. Interesting opinions from everyone. I currently live in North Carolina in a town that I have called home for the last 40 or so years. I remember when it was considered a small town. Our town now boasts 50,000 plus living here.
I remember when only 1 high school out of 6 in the county had a soccer team and no one even acknowledged they played soccer for being made a fun of. Now my county has a recreation dept that has over 5,000 kids that play soccer every fall and spring. Growth can be a wonderful thing to some and many people welcome it. Of course like all towns growing we have seen the fine restaurants like Chili's, Outback, Applebee's, Lonestar Steak House, and other well known restaurants come in a give us different choices to eat at. All these are wonderful and appreciated, but there is nothing like eating at the "Mom and Pops" good old fashioned restaurants of the past either.
It is such a wonderful world that we all are allowed our choices and likes and dislikes and can share them with our fellow men and women.
Respect is given to all who have posted before me on this thread for your opinions.
Having said all that, I will throw in my 2 cents worth! I miss the small town feel.
Now, I have to worry about gangs and more violence and drug dealers going crazy. Although I will admit to shopping at the local Wally-world to save money, I personally am not crazy about it. Any chance I have to support restaurants and stores that are owned by people who actually live in my area are taken. These are the people who started sponsoring the little leaque teams when they needed someone to help buy their team jerseys and threw them a party at the end of the season.
How many sports teams in your cities recreation dept have " wally world " as a sponsor? The local businesses give back to the people that support them, something that the bigger named stores and resaurants usually will not do.
I am thinking of moving somewhere in upper Michigan sometime in early 2010 because I miss the small town feel and hope to find it in one of the small cities there. I want to start a business and put it's name on the back of some team jersey and proudly support them from the sideline. I don't need a party going on all the time to be happy and am looking for that small town to settle down in. I first started with Harbor Beach, then Rogers City and now Cheboygan. These all look like great small towns to settle in.
I know the last thread entered here was from about 3 months ago, so I was wondering if anyone could update their opinions about Cheboygan now.

I replied in your other thread. Cheboygan has more going on that Rogers City, but it's a bigger town. It feels more like a town, whereas RC feels like a sleepy burg.
Like has been mentioned, Gaylord may be a better target, as there's the snow you are looking for, plus a more vibrant economy (it seems).
Gaylord has an 'Alpine' feel to it, as many buildings have the architecture designs from Austria / Swiss, etc. Supposedly Gaylord is a sister city to Pontresina in Switzerland, but I've also heard that nobody in that town has ever heard of Gaylord. eh, rumors, i figure, but oh well.

As you can probably guess, I am a big pusher for Michigan and especially Cheboygan!!!
The small town community feeling is wonderful in Cheboygan!
I no longer live there because i moved for a teaching job 4yrs ago, but my family is still there and I frequently visit!
Cheboygan has a great recreation department with soccer, little league, men and womens leagues in all sports, hockey, etc.!
There is a wonderful historic Opera House which pulls in many wonderful small traveling companies and boasts its own theater group (Northland Players), and also a dance studio (which I spent ten years going to).
THere is a "Wally" world, which i am NOT a fan of, it has closed down many of the downtown businesses...recently (within the past six months) new businesses have started opening on main street...tehre is a great store called Zany Kitchen now and a "main street marketplace" which houses little stands from local maple syrup makers, local artisans and some local businesses...
there are many active clubs you can join....
high school football is big...
yes there are the prescription drug problems i mentioned in the other thread, but like i said you have to really look for those people...
there are many fesitvals in teh summer and some in the winter.....
what else do you want to know?!
economy is just as bad there as it is anywhere in michigan...there is the hospital, paper factory, it is the county seat so there is the courthouse, walmart, kmart, hotels, various other businesses.....
If there were teaching jobs in michigan i'd be back
please what else are you looking for?
I love walking in to businesses and knowing people unlike here!
Note: Yes Gaylord is also a great community, but you are not on the water there.....(of course they do have lakes).....and because their economy is doing better there is more traffic there...it always seems a bit more hectic there....many people on and off the expressway....of course that is good for business but not for quietness my thoughts only!
I hope you can take a trip and visit all of these places!

One big question
Oh yea, the most important question, lol.
Is high speed internet available in Rogers City and Cheboygan.
That will be very important to me. I may be opening a web page design and computer store where we move. Computers and the internet will have a big impact on my business.
And thanks for the tip on Gaylord, I will check that one out too.
