There are many people here who would like to make people believe that things are not all that bad in MI.
It is getting to the point that you do not have to argue with people about it raining when the thunder and lightining is hitting. Just look out side, but some will still keep their backs to the window and say the sun is shining. |

I will make a positive post about Michigan...I've been here for a year and a half, moved here from my native Cali- and although it has been tough getting used to absolutely everything, here are my positive views on MI-
The trees are absolutely beautiful, winter, spring, especially fall- and there is no shortage of them- lakes...omg, so many lakes- it's like being in Tahoe every time you turn a corner! The snow in the wintertime- if anyone is a snow rookie, it's definitely me...I'm barely-after having only my second winter here-able to differentiate between the stuff I want to step on, and the stuff I do not- I walk like a dork, always looking down, because 'slipping' just waits for me, lol- but how beautiful when it snows and the sun is shining and it looks just like a snow globe- how beautiful to be out where there are huge pine trees covered in snow and just stand there and listen to the silence- And here is the kicker, for me at least- we want to buy a few acres and build a log home on it ourselves- no contractor, just us- cut the trees, peel, etc.- if I were still in Cali, there isn't a snowball's chance I could EVER hope to do that- land there is unbelievably high- you're looking at $500,000 an acre in some spots, and we're not talking about 'prime' real estate, either- and not only that, but because my husband and I are both previously divorced, we have horrific credit and one of us has a foreclosure to boot- where else could I buy 10 acres for less than 20000, and get it on a land contract with terrible credit? God bless Michigan's Land Contracts, lol~ where else could I hope to eventually get 'off the grid', and go back to a simpler life? It wouldn't be in Cali, that's for sure- not unless some rich aunt left me millions, and I see that happening about as quickly as I see them pulling up my Spanish Galleon with all of the gold dubloons- lol. Job wise....it doesn't seem to be any different here than it was where I came from- unemployment is high practically everywhere, and other than minimum wage being a little lower here than Cali, the wages for other things seems to be the same- I took a job in a law firm that paid me exactly what I made in Cali- cost of living seems to be roughly the same- only downside, is monthly water bills are a lot higher (but there are lakes, what the..?) I agree with everyone who says that attitude will determine everything for you- take a negative thought, and counteract it with 2 positives! |

For those of you that don't like the "four letter word", SNOW. Come on over to Illinois where it's still winter, no snow on the ground, cloudy, dismal and cold. What can you do in the winter if there's no snow???
The UP is the most beautiful place on earth and I am looking forward to retiring up there. Head south? Why? You spend your summers inside because the heat is unbearable. South? No way, too many snakes. It's still a nice day, woke up above ground again! WOOO HOOO! ![]() Hope you all have positive feelings today. |

Very positive post I might say manabouttownws. <said with a tone that is dripping sarcasm>
Too bad it is full of BS. Positive post about Michigan. Well for us (me, wife, 4 boys) Michigan is home, I was born in the Ludington area so it is my "real" home state. For my wife who was born in Mass, it was love at first sight of Michigan. In my younger days I couldn't wait to get out, I had traveled all over even as a youth, and just wanted something different. Different isn't always better. I know that for a fact now, I have lived in different parts of the country and Michigan has everything I and my family ever wanted. Jobs, higher pay scale, better schools, Better weather (for us), better Business climate (hard to believe, but true), openness of people, and just a better environment for raising a family. If life was nothing but Money driven, there are better places. If all you want is sunshine and no seasons, there are better states. If you want lower taxes, they are out there but you are going to have to really dig to find them (Don't even bother to look East). If you want the whole package, Michigan IS the place to be. If you have the job skills that are in demand, that is. Just like any other State, if you have the skills needed right then, you are in luck; if not, you are unemployed. Right now, we are planning our escape from the Northeast this June and headed home to West Michigan, that is the most positive thing in our lives! Knock it, go ahead, input from strangers online who know nothing of the situation means nothing really. There are better jobs waiting, and a feeling of freedom that we are coming home again. Yes we have lived in Michigan lately, yes we do know how the state is doing and the job market. some applies, some do not (job market - we both have in demand jobs) and MI is the place to be for us. 4th of July on the beach in Pentwater with a group of friends. It is going to be nice being home again where we belong. |

shoot, I have lived in Michigan 42 years.........guess what? I am still saying how beautiful the trees are and how magical snowfall is. I am still playing in the snow and getting out and enjoying it. I ride my ATV in the snow, ya got nothing on me! Michigan is a place for hearty people with lots of SISU, its not for everyone. Just because YOU cant handle it doesnt mean you should bash it. Take your delicate self down South, because you obviously dont have what it takes to enjoy Michigan

I think I've figured out that the consistently negative posts are either one or two people, just re-registering under different usernames (probably because they are being banned).
The writing styles are the same (poor English skills), and the sentence structure is similar (all clumped together in a ramble). ![]() |

Good news is hard to come by, but positive thinking is not - so here's an attempt:
I moved to Michigan 2 years ago. I bought a lovely home that is now worth 25% less than I paid - so, I'm trapped and can't sell it. I have been in the mortgage industry for 14 years - the company I worked for (AHM) filed bankruptcy and I lost my job 18 months after my move. There are no good, solid mortgage companies left and I can't find a suitable job in Michigan despite an outstanding resume and work history. If I accept a management position elsewhere, I will either have to let my home go into foreclosure (since it can't be sold due to value) OR I can abandon my family and commute to another state. My unemployment runs out in 4 weeks - but, I won't notice because I used to make PER DAY what I receive every 2 weeks. My savings is dwindling down to next to nothing and my outstanding credit history, savings and clean 'all-american' life is on the verge of no longer existing. So, what's the good news? I decided to open my own company and sell controversy and it seems to be working. Dr. Phil helped with his show yesterday - because I invented and sell an alternative to sagging pants. They have a simulated Boxer Top and the pants only LOOK like they are falling off. The TrashPants.com website is getting more hits and sales than ever. Good news, I'm alive today and have another chance to make it better for tomorrow. I wish the best to everyone struggling in Michigan - you are not alone. |
