It would be great if the UP had a metro city... always thought about it.

As long as its a clean city... no dirty industries ( and dont turn all the trees up side down in the UP, a major metro city with great nature around it... wonderful.)

We already have one. It's called Marquette. We don't want any more up here and most will fight tooth and nail to keep it from happening.

What I wouldn't give for just a few more tech jobs in Marquette and a chance to have a career in my field there, though.

That would be sacrilegious. Metro-anything and the UP are two ends of the spectrum and should NEVER meet.

This land grab is disturbing for a number of reasons. Having lived in Marquette for the past several years, I can attest to the fact that the level of enlightenment in the UP is not high enough to accept that development without allowing it to destroy what makes the UP great. They have not yet experienced the downside of that development - they are still living in a mindset that "development is inherently good because it brings jobs and people". So many places in the US have tipped that scale and now are mired in just horrific suburban messes. Just look at Traverse City - development is just repeating over and ovver and destroying the quality of life.

Leadership is so desperate in the UP to be "discovered" they're willing to take whatever they have to simply because it means they'll have more money to play with. While leadership in the city of Marquette seems to get what's important (really impressive redevelopment efforts underway), too many in control outside city limits would love to see an Interstate plowed through, another mall halfway to Negaunee (leaving the current mall half empty like the original Marquette mall is), subdivisions all around.

When you hear people talk about progress, always ask "Progress toward what?" If all it means is more people or businesses, then they clearly are not seeing the big picture. I'm pretty happy I got out. Already, development was spreading down 41 without adding anything new - just taking existing customers from existing banks, mechanics, etc... If you attract more people, you attract more businesses and ultimately it's a wash - providing little more employment for the people already living there.

That's because we aren't lost, we're in paradise and I wish to keep it that way!

There are some people like what you said above............... they should all be whipped several times with a wet noodle and banished below the bridge!!! The U.P. is perfectly fine just how it is!

BYdand

Goes to show you don't know everything.

An exaggerated description of an area/people which is based on underlying truths but is told with humor.
It is meant to be taken with humor as any local understands and is proud of what is unique about them.

Example: A visual metaphor used to describe a person who 'just doesn't get it':
'Head up your arse'
Your head is not literally 'up your arse' but is reveals an underlying truth.
