Any one who buys property in the up is asking for a butt reaming.
You may as well invest in one of the old copper mine stocks.
The whole country is going in the toilet, the up is not exempt from the lower michigan troubles.
I know of many people in the up where I used to hunt by land o lakes that live in the woods and have sightings of UFOs, not main stream people and they like it.
but it is not going to be a place worth investing in.
If you want to live off the grid and burn wood for heat and cooking shoot deer and live off the land, a great place.
If you are looking for a progresive place? You would be better off on the Moon.
I know of so many people that moved to lower michigan during the good times for work.
Unless you sell pasties or smoked fish, there is not much to do.
I guess you could always steal wood of fed. land and sell it to the idiots stupid enough to move there.
The UP a nice place to visit but no one in the main stram would want to live there.

This is a really ignorant and outdated perception of the lifestyle in the UP. I could introduce you to MANY who are sophisticated, intelligent, cultured, and worldly - a few who've seen UFOs, too. Doctors and business owners, Shakespearian thespians, incredible inventor...

Michigan, moreover, has made it economically practical for timberland management companies to plan for development. Its Commercial Forest Act requires companies to pay just $1.20 an acre annually in taxes as long as they manage for timber harvest and allow fishing and hunting.

As an individual, if I buy undeveloped acreage valued at $2000/acre I'd pay about $50 an acre in taxes. Yet another example of the fundamental lack of fairness in MI tax policy .

Actually I must admit my father was part of Canada when he first looked at the map.

Not sure if your comment was directed at mine. But I'll answer to it.
Actually my father taken 4 trips to the U.P. over the last three years. And he is amazed by the natural beauty of the U.P. He called it quote: "God's Country." His words stuck me as odd because my father is ardent atheist. But he was so smitten by the U.P. that He got my immediate family to pony up some money and bought a little place in Baraga county. I myself have been there on a very short stay to work on the place and just really had time to drive to drive from Marquette airport to the house and back again. A total of about an hour and 3 hours driving. And I pretty much thought the same thing my father thought of the U.P. That it is in a work..... MAJESTIC.

Never did say I know everything. Still stand with the comment I made of the inane post you made. Couple of things wrong with your "explanation" first is that I doubt you live anywhere near the north Maine woods so don't know what brand of humor is used there, and the second mistake is that I am from the UP and am quite aware of the sense of humor there. Neither of which applied to the post you made that I referred to. So you are 2 for 2 on inane posts in response to comments made by me.
Here comes the pitch... are you going to go for 3 of 3? My bet is yes.
I have to agree with several of the later posts made about peoples perceptions of the UP. Hopefully it will keep the morons out who believe the stupidity of having to hunt and fish to eat, and cut wood to have heat. I mean, come on what next loin cloths at the Bridge? A giant parking lot in St. Ignace so you can pick up either your dog sled or pack mule and head home to your sod hut? And the ones who picture a life right out of Mother Earth News, off grid, and blissfully reliving the pioneering days. Not saying that it a wrong way, just not the norm for the UP.
Then you get the other ones who think the locals are just waiting for their brilliance to show up and lead the way into the 21st century. Mass developments, selling every square inch to those who want to move their version of Boston, Chicago, Or LA wherever they go. Don't want to be where they are now, but don't want anyplace they move to be different either. Those types you see on this forum all the time and you know they are just miserable, and unhappy all the time. Who wants that as a new neighbor.
My intent was that while some development isn't always a bad thing, you have to be aware of how the large corporations are operating in other states when they want to move into any area. I would HATE to see the UP turned into Long Island North just for a few dollars.

more room
I dont think room was ever a problem in the up, and I dont think it will be for the next couple of hundred years.
I think jobs will be the problem or lack of them for the next 50 years or more.
