Understood. But much of the economic activity in the UP is decaying or stagnant. New development is necessary to replace the former and lost economies. Otherwise, nobody will live up here, and the whole UP will become gated retirement/recreation land and parks... in other words, a playground for trolls and cheeseheads.
No development = no future.

The Keewenaw area may be stagnant (hope not), but my area (Marquette) is growing faster then I would like. Escanaba is doing fairly well too. I've heard the Soo isn't doing well either but I haven't been that way in awhile.

Well no I did not contradict myself. I love the UP but I am not from the UP. I relocated here almost three years ago because my husband was transferred here for a three year stint. So no there is no way I could have changed my career to fit living in the UP. I have come to love the area yet it is not possible for us to stay.
I am glad you were able to change. I think is a little to late for us to do so...

Peace branch being extended.....
I really wasn't trying to sound offensive if I did. I just meant that we are not natives either, but changed our career plans/goals when we decided this is where we wish to settle.
I do sincerely wish you the best! May wherever you move to be financially rewarding enough for you to come back and visit this land often!

We will be retiring in 4-6 years and thinking of moving back to UP. Living experience in UP was mid 1970s as students at LSSC when we were young and foolish. We have done well in SE MI., but when our surviving "oldsters" have gone to be with their spouses we will have no real heartfelt reason to stay. We really have no desires in life other than to spend the 30+years together, with a dog or three, a comfortable house with Sauna(first remodel evry house we have had). We think a few amenities in the area would be nice and our thinking the Houghton/Hancock area, Marquette and maybe the Soo are where we would go. Our we thinking right or have we gone from young and foolish to older and more foolish?

I'd say you were foolish to wait so long! We would love to move to the Houghton area. I'm married to a Finn after all... His family homestead is in that area. Beautiful!

While we would like to move ASAP, we both have a remaining parent that form the center of our lives. My dad lives in as Assisted Living residence and is in his final months of life. We live next door to my partners mom who is becoming more confused with each day and will probably be moving to the same Assisted Living residence as my dad in the next few months. So their needs and comfort comes first. I have read many posts that write about how little there is to doin the UP but all those people need to assess what ultimately is important to them. Believe it or not, the highlight of our week is when the four of us have our Sunday eveing meal together with Lawrence Welk re-runs on PBS playing in the background.. It is one of those times that makes us realize that all the stuff we have collected or that goes on during the week is of very little importance. But the urge to return to the UP and a less frenetic way of life gets stronger every day.
