I'm currently in the same predicament -- will be starting a job at SVSU in August. Does the same advice still stand? I've been looking in Bay City, and there really isn't anything but single family homes. I'm a single female, and this will be my first time living without roommates. I also like being in walking distance from bars/restaurants, but that doesn't really look like it will be an option if I'm looking for a safer neighborhood. Is it more or less I have to choose between fun and safety?

Unless you plan on living in or near downtown Saginaw, you have nothing to fear in almost any other area. SVSU is in-between both cities, and is a rural area. Anywhere in Saginaw Township area is about as safe as you can get, baring nuclear or (more likely) chemical accidents. Of course if you are a lone female, you obviously must take whatever normal precautions for safety you'd do anywhere. But you aren't going to be dodging bullets and rapists non-stop.

Don't move too close to the sugar beet plant in Bay City, unless you plan on holding your breath for as long as you live there. I highly suggest you rent somewhere near Fashion Square Mall, and see how things go. Bay City has a lot of recent downtown / urban apartment / developments, both in old buildings and in new planed developments.

The Uptown area which was built on the old Brown Hoist crane manufacturing site has Apartments, the Mill End building was turned into Loft Apartments, and there are other old buildings right downtown that are being turned into condos or apartments.
