Mitt Romney and Michigan
Just curious how many displaced auto workers actually bought into Romney's speech about returning the auto industry to Michigan from over seas? I am also curious if anyone here has taken advantage of any of the governments retraining programs for workers whose jobs have been sent over seas? I have a friend whose husband went back to school, Ferris to be exact, and will have his HVAC engineering degree this May. Most of this was paid for by a retraining program. I hope that most of you are smart enought to realize that things are never going to be like they used to be and the only way to bring Michigan back is for everyone to finally get that. It is sad and when I visit it really breaks my heart to see how many people are struggling. When I watched Romney's speech I really was angry and felt like he was just telling Michigan residents what he thought they wanted to hear and not what the reality of the situation is.

Obviously a lot of Michiganians bought into Romney's rhetoric. Why do you think he won so handily? Unfortunately, his words are nothing more than a fantasy. One he doesn't even believe himself.

Romney's a politician, what can you expect? If he loves Michigan so much, why didn't he come back here and run for governor instead of Massachussetts? He acts like he cares about our economical dilemma and says he's proud of his Michigan roots when it's convenient for his cause. His commercials before the Michigan primary made me physically ill, especially after so many people apparently bought into them.

I was out of town. What did he actually say? Did he say he woudl bring automotive jobs back to Michigan or did he just say that he would bring jobs back to Michigan. One is a stupid thing to say the other is pretty much what you would expect.
They all say what they think you want to hear. Hillary told Californians that she would spend 35 billion there to ease the foreclosure crises, but did not explain how that would be done, nor where the money would come from.
Of course no one has any plan that makes sense. There is no government solution. the world is changing and they cannot stop or change that.

Romney said: "I hear people say, 'It's gone, those jobs are gone, transportation's gone, it's not coming back,'" he said. "I'm going to fight for every single job. I'm going to rebuild the industry. I'm going to take burdens off the back of the auto industry."
While McCain said: "The jobs that are leaving the state of Michigan have left and are not coming back. We're going to try to create new jobs."
I'm a Democrat, but I observed those comments with great interest. Sure, they're politicians and politicians say all sorts of crazy things. But I think Romney's comments were below the belt - making a joke out of what so many people here hope and dream will happen. Sure, we all know it's a fantasy, but I think it's almost cruel to play people that way.

I voted for Romney but it had nothing to do with his remarks on the lost jobs. He's simply the most conservative among the viable Republican candidates left. It was clear to me that Fred Thompson had no chance and this was validated when he pulled out of the race after South Carolina.
This wasn't a general election -- it was a Republican primary. Romney may have been pandering here but it shouldn't be a huge shock that the more conservative choice would win in a primary. McCain has support from independents and liberals but they are not the Republican base. His comments about jobs being lost forever here in MI probably just stopped a lot of the Democrats from actively supporting him here since they didn't have a primary of their own.

I wouldn't vote for Romney because he's a duplicitous political prostitute whose current incarnation is that of a right-wing banana republic lunatic. I barely noticed what he said about Michigan's auto industry. If you'll say you have to check with your lawyers rather than the Constitution before you attack Iran, that waterboarding might not be torture, that Guantanamo should be doubled, and that any religion is okay but no religion isn't okay, you won't get my vote even if you're the most splendid economic mind since Adam Smith.

It's a shame we have such poor choices on the Republican side but any of them would be better than the Democratic alternative. I wish we could ban both parties from the White House for a term or two and see what the third party candidates could offer like Libertarian vs Green/Socialist or whatever.

It's a shame that people vote for a candidate because they are stereotyped conservative or liberal. I think if people actually listen to the candidates they will actually get the feel of his/her character. It is clear that Romney will say whatever to win and this country does not need a leader like that. It is better to face the truth and deal with it.

Which of the candidates do you believe is NOT just saying whatever they think will help them win? I have yet to find one of them that you can actually believe what they say. even if they mean some of the the things that they say now, they are unrealistic and when the reality of the politica climate slaps them in the fact in Washington, they will suddenly backtrack on all of their promises. They always do.
