Very few places are going to have camp sites right on the water, usually they are back from the beach a hundred feet or so. That being said, maple Bay campground on the north west end of Burt lake is a small state forest campground. Pit toilets, but I believe they do have fresh water available, but it's rural camping with a nice beach. The campgrounds are no reservation / first come first serve, so I wouldn't expect to show up on a Friday afternoon and get one.

If you use Google Maps and search for campgrounds everything will show up and then you can do more research.

Metamora-Hadley State Park has campsites on the water. Not really up north, but very rural in Lapeer County. The beach is across the lake though. I'm not sure if there is a rule prohibiting swimming from the opposite side.

Very clean lake. We go there all the time. I can still see my feet in water four feet deep.

I'll second the Petoskey suggestion, beautiful area!

Why not head to Beaver Island? There are a couple of campgrounds that are right on Lake Michigan…the Bill Wagner Campground comes to mind right away. It'd be the perfect place to escape for a few days and you wouldn't have to worry about crowds or reservations. In fact, it's even possible you'll have the campground to yourself. There are unlimited hiking trails on the island and you can easily pick-up a trail map. There is also a place called Happy Paddle downtown that rents kayaks and bikes. The owner is a really nice guy. Check it out!

Barnes County Park in Eastport doesn't have campsites right on Grand Traverse Bay but most of the campsites are pretty darn close. It's a beautiful part of the bay too, where you can see the tip of Mission Point and the tip of Leelanau Peninsula across the bay.

It's hard to camp closer to Lake Michigan than the campground at Grand Haven SP, but there isn't much to the park other than the beach. For hiking, I'd go to Hoffmaster SP over by Muskegon.
