I've seen a gray wolf near Torch Lake in Antrim County. Middle of the night out by the deck of the cottage and sent my hair standing up on end.

Wild animals are comman in Michigan, not long ago ( as it seems to me ) there was a 3 bears spotted ( mother bear, and cubs ) in the capital city of Michigan... which is Lansing near a local Walmart. There have also been reports of wolverines attacking pets outdoors in the Lansing metro area. I've seen wolves, foxes, deers ect... but in Lansing seeing bears crossing Walmart is rare ( I'll say.)

Why do you think Michigan is Called "The Wolverine State"?

The Wolverine State:
It has been generally accepted that Michigan was nicknamed "The Wolverine State" for the abundance of wolverines that once roamed the peninsula. However, according to the Michigan Historical Center, wolverines were very rare in Michigan if they were present at all. It's not clear how this nickname originated, but there are two theories.

You have several thousand acres of Federal forests. This area also boasts premier blue ribbon trout streams some of the best in the country for outdoor enthusiasts ranging from the Big Manistee River, Little Manistte, and a watershed that has many beautiful coldwater streams feeding those river systems such as the Pine River.

Other areas boasting great fishing is the Muskegon River system further to the South. The Au Sable, boardman and Jordan.

This area has a major ski lodge, golf resort, and also has year around snowmobile trails, some groomed I believe.

Also there are miles of extensive Federal trail systems for hiking and rough camping.

There is kayaking, canoeing and premier trout fishing as well.

A little something for everyone

OH, but do I remember that stretch of the woods!
At one time known as "The Back Waters"
A beautiful place and you couldn't help but have fun.

I'm from Cadillac.

Is anyone familiar with the old Paper Mill in "Filer City" off the Manistee River?
I've never forgotten that smell.

There are bald eagles in every county in the state. I'm sure I read that last year.

Wolves, Moose, Elk, Bobcats, Loons, Megansers are the "exotics" that live in the state.
We've got the regular stuff too... coyotes, racoons, deer, ducks, too many Canada Geese, too many Cormorants, and a lot of other stuff too.

There's a PBS show I see in Grand Rapids called "Michigan Out of Doors" that talks about that stuff a lot.

To see much more than deer and coyotes you'll need to get north of US-10 though.

That's what hunting seasons all about.

You just about covered it. I live in Crawford county and we have a ton of different wildlife here. We even saw a cougar over by Suttons Bay go flying across the highway in front of us. Only thing mentioned that I haven't seen up here is the wolf, moose, and of course the wolverine. We have had some wild turkeys so tame that they would come up and eat out of my hand. Had a black bear tear apart the deer fence we put up around our garden. I see and hear coyotes all the time as well as a family of fox that live in the river bank just upstream from me. Beaver just about clear cut the poplar trees off my neighbors property. If it is in Michigan it will probably be hanging around up here somewhere. Oh almost forgot, I almost T-Boned a six by six bull elk on I-75 just north of Grayling a few years ago. I do believe that raskel would have done some serious damage to the car. In answer to thhe original question,YUP, we got "Critters" up here.
