Interesting choice.
I lived in the 'thumb' of Michigan near Vassar for 6 years.
Trivia- its the only city in Tuscola County, though not the largest 'settlement or County Seat(Caro).
Newspaper source, I still read it online from time to time:
TuscolaToday.com - The Michigan Thumb's leading news and information Web site | Tuscola County Advertiser, Mix 92.1, Reese Reporter, Bargain Times
Statistics, etc: Vassar, Michigan (MI) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
Area- Generally rural, nearest big cities Bay City/ Saginaw
Very 'small town' look, nice older downtown. Located in a valley, the downtown has been badly flooded couple times last 20 years.
Lodging- Several choices in/near Vassar. Small chain and independant motels, some B&B's in Vassar and near there.
Day Tour recommendations- Bay City is an interesting gritty old industrial port town, used to be ethnic/Polish. A long day's drive would be to 'circle the thumb' follow Rte 25 along Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron all the way around to Port Sanillac then back across toward Vassar. Top of the thumb Port Austin Grindstone- wow! A real gem, all of Huron County.
Enjoy your visit !

Very very safe to walk around in Vassar.
What little crime is in Vassar is usually a rare break-in or domestic violence type. It's a rural type town of about 2,000 people so everyone pretty much knows each other. As an outsider, you'll be 'noticed' but not harassed.
The 'thumb' of Michian is quite tourist-oriented.
Yes, you will see nice old Victorian homes in and around Vassar.

Sorry, there is no public transport such as bus routes or trains to Vassar and most of the thumb. You would need to rent a car to tour the area.
Frankenmuth is one of the best tourist towns around the area. I think you would like the Bavarian decor, the Christmas shop, Chicken dinner houses, etc.

Frankenmuth can be quite pricey for hotels. I live in Vassar. We moved here 5 almost 6 years ago. Very nice small town. Everyone knows everyone and is related to someone. There is a very nice old time theater in town that was just reopened with the last 1 1/2 years. It was completely renovated to look like the same as it did when it was originally opened. There are a few nice resturants down town and some small shops. Very friendly area and very safe. There is a bike trial to ride on or walk. We prefer to walk with our kids. A huge basketball pavillion and park. A little ice cream shop and on Friday is the some there is a Farmers Market. Each week is something new and usually a band to will play. There are several victorian homes to see. Hope you enjoy it here.
