Hmm, that's interesting. So maybe having a more college-educated population is not the key to job and population growth (?) I'll have to compare some of the stats of the fastest-growing areas in the country compared to education attainment.

The city-data stats are for "cities", not for metro areas. Only about 20% of Lansing's and GR's populations live in the city. Just FYI.

I'm not sure if there is a "direct" correlation between the unemployment rate and percentage of college graduates, but it does create more competition for positions and leave fewer positions open, there are other areas in the U.S. that are seeing this right now. Another theory could be that in areas of higher unemployment, the positions are going unfilled due to the lack of qualified candidates........I haven't found any published studies on this topic yet....

Kalamazoo is not doing too bad. They actually gained 600 jobs county-wide last year. The downtown has really come a long way in the last ten years.

Ann Arbor has a pretty good tech base. Lots of companies out there. But I know too many engineers that live out there and drive to the detroit suburbs or even the east side to work. Most likely because there are engineering jobs in AA but not as many auto related jobs. I would move out that way if I could find a job there. Its only a half hour drive for me right now so my commute would be nothing.

I wonder how many recent grads still live in Ann Arbor. And how that affects the data for % of population with degrees. I would find it hard to believe that there would be that many jobs for everyone. AA isn't small but not that big either.

its just too bad the amount of drugs in the ann arbor and ypsi area. it's unreal. heroin is becoming a big problem, and meth apparently, leaking in from all the crap places that surround it. ann arbor is generally safe and fun, but wow i personally wouldn't raise a family there.

I think you'll find drugs around any college town, but Ann Arbor has one of the lowest crime rates in the State. Meth is a far greater problem in rural areas due to the nature of manufacturing it most "meth farms" that have been busted were in rural areas of Michigan. I suppose you could find someone doing drugs in the safest town if you were looking for it.

Yup! Wikipedia says that Grosse Ile is the safest town in Michigan and we have had at least one drug bust that I know of. I think that the lady was from somewhere else and had coke in her car, but she must have been going somewhere with it. I seem to vaguely remember one or two other instances. And high school kids smoking pot is not unheard of. However I think they may go elsewhere for that. The rumor is that the cops use tasers to break up parties. Probably exaggerated, but there is usually a modicum of truth to such stories.

All the crap places that surround it? Outside of Ypsi, what are you talking about? Saline? Dexter, Chelsea? South Lyon? Yep, may as well be in the middle of compton with those places surrounding us.

There are many things that suck about this area, but safety issues and drugs concerns are not one of them.

This is very funny. Thanks. I like to laugh.

You forgot Plymouth and Canton - scary bad places those are.
